About a week ago, I accidentally opened a spoof email from PayPal (I was expecting a genuine message from them) and Norton detected a problem , but the message was something like "cannot access file ".
Unfortunately, my first reaction was to delete the email, before noting the whole Norton message.

    I operate XP Home.

I did a Norton scan and a McAfee scan and found nothing.
I have also run AdAware and Spybot, with nor problems identified.

    Two problems have occurred.

I can not access my gmail account, the page just states "Loading ", the bottom bar shows "Done ", but nothing happens.
I realise this has been a problem with gmail, so it may be unconnected.

Linked with this first problem is that whilst surfing, this sometimes happens with other pages.
Despite refreshing, returning later, rebooting etc., they will not open.

Finally, my HewlittPackard Digital Imaging programme "is not responding ", despite reloading the CD.

I appreciate these problems may not be linked with the PayPal email, but I am working on the basis of "whats new? ".

I have run Hijackthis and have a logsheet, would someone like to take a look at this for me, please ?

Any other suggestions would be appreciated.

Hi Cranfield. Yup - your latest location for HJT is good.

I really don't see any major issues in the log which leads me to believe your problem is a result of damage from the earlier critters or from some sort of by-blow when you removed them. Someone may spot a baddie I've missed.

First thing to try is opening a cmd prompt (start => run => cmd and OK) then
    Code:
    sfc /scannow
which is about the only way in XP to repair IE and may also find some additional files that need fixing or replacing.

If that doesn't get you fixed, download and run LSPFix. It's usually suggested when you can't browse at all but I've seen times when it has helped with 'sometimes' browser issues as well.

If no joy, we'll try a couple or three other things.

You can use HJT to get rid of a couple of startup entries. Legit apps but not needed at startup and not helpful.

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe" -osboot
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime

As an added note, XP does a great job of managing memory and the various memory managers either don't help or mess things up. Were it my PC, I'd get rid of
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [FreeRAM XP] "C:\Documents and Settings\Brian\My Documents\Downloaded programmes\freeRAM\FreeRAM XP Pro 1.40.exe" -win
and then uninstall the app itself. 'Pro' version so you probably paid for the thing so donate the program to a friend who uses 9X/ME and consider it a Christmas gift.

Thanks Newt, I have got my HPDigital Imaging Programme back, but gmail is still unavailable.
I think this may be a seperate issue with gmail, rather than my PC.
Only time will see if the hanging web pages clears up.

I would mention that the FreeRam programme was very hard to uninstall and completely delete.
I won't be passing it on to anybody..............just in case. ;)
