Whenever XP SP1 starts or I come out of a screensaver, I am forced to click on my username in order to continue. This didn't begin happening until I installed the last set of security updates. Needless to say, this is extremely annoying, especially since I am the only user on this computer. How do I get rid of this screen?

    Welcome to the Windows BBS,

I got the same nagging Welcome screen when I installed .NET framework version 1.1 recently. I remedied the situation by uninstalling it. :) Is that the one you got?

I suppose there may be some way to keep it and ditch the Welcome screen but I didn't find it easy. What I did find was that I didn't need .NET Framework version 1.1 since I do no software creating whatsoever.

    YMMV

I find that TweakUi will restore Autologon so if you want to keep that optional update, that's probably the easiest method to get around the nag screen.

If you right click on the desktop, click properties, then the screensaver tab, is the box "on resume, prompt for password" unticked?

:D Johanna, It showed up quicker than I expected. Two day service, we discussed that on 17 dec.

TweakUi is the only way around it that I could dig up. Out of curiousity I reinstalled .NET framework last night out of sympathy for kefka95 and was able to at least get that relief. I tried all the other combinations of options available in Control Panel.

Since the problem involves logon and a password, which is encrypted by nature, it becomes a bit of a sticky wicket when trying to manipulate things.

Now I have rolled it back off again since for me, it represents 91 megs of not needed bloat.

I'm satisfied with that solution but if you come up with something better/easier I'd be happy to stick it on the old Stacker for future use.

To automatically logon a user account without stopping at the Welcome screen:

    1. Go to Start>Run
    2. Type in "control userpasswords2" (without the quotes, with the space after "control "), click OK
    3. Uncheck "Users must enter a username and password in order to use this computer," click OK
    4. In the dialog box that appears, enter the username and password of the account you want it to logon automatically. If the account has no password, leave the password field blank, click OK.

    That should do it.

Thanks Miz, If kefka95 doesn't come back, I'll reinstall .NET frameware 1.1 once more and try that.

I don't see how that would stop the nag pause since the system wouldn't know who was wanting to login without some user input and technically, thanks to .NET framework 1.1, there are multiple users.

I was typing when you posted Zander. That sounds like you have dug up the correct solution! What they don't tell us up front on those items could fill a hard drive. :D

Thanks for the info. It tends to give value to TweakUi for those who don't go into the Registry directly. ;)

You're right, I had just installed .NET Framework 1.1. I followed the instructions in the link Zander provided, and it seems to have gotten rid of the problem! Thanks for all your help!

Glad to hear it did the trick for you. :)
Isn't that the truth. Can't remember how many times I've fixed a problem here on my computer or other peoples that was caused by an update of something or another. Whether Windows or some other software such as an antivirus program they all seem to be susceptible to this type of thing when updating. Actually, when I first installed .NET 1.1 I was going to uninstall it too (for this reason) but I had a program I wanted to try at the time that required it so I decided to see what I could find about it in the MS knowledge base. I got lucky and found that article. I kept it thinking that sooner or later somebody would be looking for the same thing. Guess it paid off. :)
