I'm on XP-SP2 and was notified of this update on the Windows Update site (not Automatic Updates since it isn't critical). Reading Outlook Express for Windows update available indicates that this update applies to XP-SP2 as well, I quote:

The article doen't mention operating systems that the update applies to but versions of Outlook Express, I quote:

Yes, I saw that when I downloaded the update. It made me wonder why it was suggested to my system on the Windows Update site when it was not applicable. I clicked the "Read me" link that was included in the download but the article was probably not ready until late yesterday or early today when I could access it. I installed the update since the swedish language is "full" of non-ASCII characters like Å å Ä ä Ö ö.

Christer--How was this Cumulative OE Update "suggested" to you? I do not have Windows Update set to notify me, but I go there from time to time. This update is not offered by a WU scan, but I can get it by clicking on Optional Updates in the left panel.
I also read the two different MS articles on the Update.
The article reference by Arie is entitled
"Microsoft Releases Cumulative Update for Outlook Express 6 Service Pack 1" though I see the references to SP2 in what for me would be unlikely circumstances.
    The article
    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...8b-69b0-4813-9856-a1a3da675baf&displaylang=en
would certainly lead me to think it does not apply to XP SP2.
And if there is such a thing, not to OE SP2. (As I noted in an earlier thread, I have never understood whether there is an OE 6 SP2 and an IE 6 SP2.)
    http://www.windowsbbs.com/showpost.php?p=206330&postcount=4

Does everyone (all two of you :) )feel that there is no harm in putting this update on a system with XP SP2?

    Hi Jim!

I have set Automatic Update to notify but I only take notes of the suggestions, then I cancel out.

Next, I go to Windows Update to see if I get the same message there and to this date, I always have. When I'm there, I also check the recommended (non-critical) updates. There was one addition, KB887797. I always read up on recommended updates before making the decision but on day 1, the KB article was not yet published. When it became available, I decided to install it due to the non-ASCII-character issue. This was actually the first recommended update that I have accepted on SP2.

So, KB887797 was "suggested to me" in the same spot as You found it!

It's only been a day since I installed it but it has not done any harm on my system but neither has it done any noticable good. It appears in Add/Remove.

    Edited:

To continue Arie's "rant" on Microsoft consitency, why do the talk about Optional Updates on Windows Update but Recommended Updates on Windows Download?

Christer--Thanks. Looking forward to hearing that all is OK with your OE after a week or so!!
    BTW--Are you aware if there is a SP2 for IE6 or OE6?

Jim, both OE and IE have SP2 versions and if you have them it will be listed in the Help > About section of each. Take a look-see there and find out.

    On mine they say:

    OE says:
    6.00.2900.2180[xpsp_sp2_rtm.0408033-2158]

    and IE says:
    Version: 6.0.2900.2180.xpsp_sp2_rtm.040803-2158

I don't know why the missing zero on IE but it's true.?

BTW, I'm declining the offer of the afore mentioned optional patch since I don't think I will ever need it.

surferdude2--Yep. That is what my Help|About windows say. Seems another confusion in the MS announcements of the KB887797 update, which are specific to OE SP1.

P.S. The main reasons I asked this is that I feel Help|About IE showed the "sp2" descriptions before I installed Windows XP SP2. But I could be wrong. Been installing an awful lot in the last four months when I bought the "new" PC. :)

I think you may be mistaken Jim. I do believe the sp2 got added to IE and OE at the same time XP SP2 was installed. I don't recall doing anything else to either.

There were a few updates that were marked SP2 before the actual Service pack was released, and now that I let Windows Update do its thing, I have "hotfixes" that say SP3. I doubt, like SD2, that I will ever need the OE update, but I took it (it was recommended, not critical) only because I try to do things "by default" when I can, so when the telephone starts ringing about "this weird thing my computer is doing now" I have a vague idea of what they are talking about. It's been 24 hours, no problems with any of the 8 updates I accepted, and I used the comp hard, today.

For anyone following this thread: if you don't know what updates you have installed on your computer, you can find out on the MS site, run a Belarc, or use qfecheck IF you have XP.

    Jim,
I have the same version of IE and OE as 'dude and You, including (or is it excluding) the missing 0 in the version designation of IE.

I have read somewhere that file version designations contain "rtm" when it is the original file of a certain sp-level but that the designation will change according to how a future update was introduced.

As an aside, my installation is from a slipstreamed CD, the original + SP2. What are Yours?

Mine is the original OEM install that came with the box in April of 2002. XP is quite robust!

With SP1(a) on top and then SP2 on top?

Yes, all criticals and SP's were implemented as soon as they came out. All went in over the preceding.

ps. I am currently only refusing 3 optional components; .Net Framework Ver. 1.1, Highmat Support (831240) and the Journal Viewer.

My IE version is the same as SD2's- XP Pro cd bought in Dec 01, installed on new comp in September 04, then I bled Windows Update online. I don't have the "extra" zero, either.
