I have a network with three computers XP/SP2. I am connected via cable modem to a router with a built in switch(hub). I was asked to look at a PC and clean up the junk on it. I have it working fine now with no errors and all the spy-ware and ad-ware removed. The computer was connected via a DSL modem and no network. I am not able to connect to the internet. All the software for the DSL modem has been removed. I can not see the network unless I designate an IP within my router/firewall range. I am using 192.168.0.150/255.255.255.0. With this entered into the TCP/IP settings I can access my network but not the Internet, I need a dynamic IP not a static IP. If I remove the IP from the TCP/IP settings and reboot IPCONFIG shows that I have 169.254.222.245/255.255.0.0 as the IP. This will not work with my router and I can not see the other computers on my network. I can not get rid of this IP unless I change the TCP/IP settings. Help!

Ron - if all were well with the PC and you had put in a gateway address in addition to the other information (probably 192.168.0.1) then it should find the internet.

Getting the 169.254.x.x address when you set it for auto and renew simply means it isn't finding your DHCP server which is also a part of the router/switch. That doesn't sound too great.

Assuming you are using the same gateway address on it that you use on the working machines, I suspect that the spyware removal damaged the IP stack somehow. Not uncommon for that to happen. Try downloading and running LSPFix.

If no luck with any of that, say what OS is on the PC and we'll try some other things.

Thanks Newt. I refreshed that TCP/IP stack and ran "netsh winsock reset" then rebooted and it worked. I also ran a small utility called WinsocketXPFix.exe
