    Hello.

I'm using Windows 98SE with LAN connection. Also, I have installed the Internet Connection Sharing. Currently, everything is working fine, except that a client computer want to connect to the internet via proxy. How could we do that?
Please don't suggest us to use an additional software. We had a bad experience when we installed the Wingate 6.0 <trial version>. We had to format and re-install the windows!
    Thanks in advance!

A proxy server is a server that acts as a "go-between "between an organization and the Internet. They serve to improve performance by filling a request directly rather than forwarding the user to the Internet if the necessary information is available. Proxy server also serve to block unauthorized activity - outgoing or incoming (referred to as "firewalls ").

Sorry but you gotta use either software or hardware to act as your proxy server.

    Dear Newt
Thank you for your advice. However, may I share the experience when I used some proxy software, so that you might give me some advice.
First of all, my friend suggest me to use Wingate. He provided me Wingate version 5.2.855. I installed it and follow its instruction to give a static IP address <198.something I believe> to the host computer (I mean the computer that connected to the internet. The computers in my LAN has no real host. They just share resources to each other)
The problem is, after I did as instructed, all other computers can't see this computer. On the other hand, if I remove the static IP address, the Wingate won't work.
After that, I downloaded Wingate 6.0 <trial version> and installed it on the machine, hope that newer version might solve the problem. But, after I installed and reboot, the Windows couldn't start! it cause "Windows protection error "!.
I used Windows in Save-Mode to remove the Wingate 6.0. However, after that, the computer had lost the ability to share internet connection. I have to format the hard-drive and re-install Windows to regain it.
Thus, right now, I'm pretty afraid to try another software. I might did it wrong somewhere when I installed Wingate  , so please give me some advice.
    Appreciate!

    P.S. I used Intel Cel 1.1 GHz 256 Ram, Network Card = Realtek RTL8139
    Windows 98SE, Dial-up internet connection

I'll be glad to try to help out. And I agree it can be worrysome when you try something that should work and it wrecks the PC. Not a good feeling. Been there and done that several times.

Are you simply trying to get two PCs to share a single modem connection to the internet?

If not, please give more detail about what you want to do.

    Dear Newt

Thank you for your generosity. What I want to do is simple. I would like to do internet sharing with several PCs. However, some of my client PCs want to connect to the internet by using Proxy.

[Client PCs] ---> [Host PC with internet connection] ===> [A Proxy in the internet] ===> [Internet]

With my limited understanding, I believe that the Client PCs can't set proxy server with Internet Option/Connection on the Explorer Menu. Moreover, when I try this setting on the Host machine, only the Host machine has the connection via proxy. How could I make the Host PC do all connection via proxy?

    Thank again! :)

98SE and later have a utility called ICS (internet connection sharing) that works well and will not cause system troubles.

http://www.annoyances.org/exec/show/ics has a good how-to article for 98SE and above.
