Hi...I just reloaded windows 98 and now I can't get back on the net. I have
noticed that my computer won't recognize my modem. What should I do to correct this?
...I can tell you that my
program is US Robotics 56k fax win int. and i have an itel celeron. Also...now when I try to reload the windows 98 the illegal operations box pops up and when I go to clt/alt delete first i get...point manager not responding, then winoldap not responding then windows 98 not responding. I can't even turn the machine off now...just must keep going to reset or unplugging....also...I'd like to copy all of my documents before this thing crashes altogether. Is there an easy way of highlighting the whole file and copying it at one time instead of one document at a time?
Thanks so much for your time.!

Do you have the drivers for the modem? You will need them. Win98 is not good at recognizing PCI modems.
First, uninstall modem from Add\Remove Programs if present.
You need to go to Start\Run and type in Msconfig and press Enter. Click on Advanced, then put a check for Enable Startup Menu. Shut down the computer. Remove the modem from the inside of the computer.
Start the computer, selecting Safe Mode. When it is running, right click on My Computer and select Properties, click on Device Manager tab. Then remove all Modem entries, be sure to get the 'Wave Device for Voice Modem' under the Sound category.
When done, remove the checkmark for Enable Startup Menu. Shut down and replace the modem, make sure it is seated correctly.
Allow the computer to boot normally, have the drivers ready.

By the way, when you reinstall windows while windows is running, problems like this result. It is best installed by booting the computer with a boot floppy.

I have one question, what caused you to want to reinstall windows?

That is indeed true. For more than one reason.

1--When booting from the floppy NONE of Windows is running and ( mainly an overtop re-install ) will overwrite/replace files much better. ( if they still exist that is ). And will normally pick up all that is there already. Drivers and all.

2--If Windows does still exist on the HD, booting from the Floopy gives a much better chance of it going back into C:\Windows. Booting from the HD it will ( most of the time ) be but iinto a different folder. Usuall it says C:\Windows001 which is not good.

You still need to WATCH carefully though. As Windows is FULL of surprises ALLWAYS.
