I am working on a problem for a friend. Gateway Machine, XP Pro SP2 installed. When you try to open IE in comes up with an error and refuses to open. Can't get Windows updates now or anything else! Tried to uninstall and reinstall with XP CD but no help. Loaded Mozilla so I could try to get the latest version of XP but can find only the setup executable (IE6SP1). When I try to start it, it says that a newer version already exists and won't install. Is there a full version of IE6 SP1 that I can download and install over the one that won't come up?

    Thanks!

    Hello TrippHammer,

You're going to have to repair the installation. Two ways: the first to try is sfc:

Start > Run > cmd sfc /scannow and have your XP install disc handy. There is a space between sfc and /

sfc - system file checker, retrieves the correct version of the file from %Systemroot%\System32\Dllcache or the Windows installation source files, and then replaces the incorrect file.

If you want to see what was replaced, right click My Computer > manage, expand event viewer > system.

The second and more serious: http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm Repair of the XP installation.

In both cases have to have the XP cd.

    Regards - Charles
