Gateway pc running dual boot of xp home & xp pro. Keyboard works in bios but locks up upon entry to windows. I/O address conflict in device mgr (error code 10). Both devices using same i/o. Keyboard is ps2, mouse is usb using adapter for usb to serial. external modem is using only usb port available. All hardware was working fine, problem came out of the blue with no new hardware or software install.

    Have tried:

    - McAfee virus scan (current with updates)
    - switched to serial mouse
    - turned off pnp in bios
    - uninstalling both keyboard & mouse in safe mode device mgr
    - cold boot

XP still installs default drivers for both devices on cold reboot with mouse overtaking keyboard i/o address. Unable to force IRQ and/or I/O address for either item! AAAAAGGGGGGGGHHHHHHH!

Suggestions (other than sledgehammer or reinstall xp)?????

    Thanks,

    careed

Is this happening to both OS's? Does the mobo support a ps/2 connector for the mouse? Will the pc boot and keyboard work if the mouse is disconnected altogether?

    Not my pc

My father-in-laws pc about 75 miles away from me right now. Tried to troubleshoot while I was visiting.
Yes happens in both os's. Yes, keyboard locks when mouse is disconnected and when mouse AND keyboard uninstalled in device mgr and cold booted. Mobo ps2 connection shouldn't matter because switched to serial mouse with no adapter to run all tests. I'm stumped....

I know it works in bios, but..... have you tried a different keyboard? Will command prompt only work in safe mode? How about an old 95/98 boot disk?
    (grasping at straws here).

Sounds like your using a com port which requires both irq and i/o. If your system supports the ps/2 connector for the mouse why not try it? I run XP pro sp1 and my ps/2 mouse only uses an irq setting (12) but no i/o resources.

I'm sure this is going to be one of those Homer Simpson moments... DOH!

    Still researching...

Hey Fitz, thanks for the ideas. Seems like your the only one who cares!

Haven't tried different keyboard yet. I've been researching error code 10 since post. Couldn't surf at father-in-law's house. Have found interesting info at MS web site. All code 10 issue resolutions refer to Svc Pk 2. I called to ask if Svc Pk 2 installed and he said "no ". AHA! I will be burning a copy for him and take it over to install. May take me a few days. Will post results when I have them.

Have a good one and wish me luck! ;)

He cares and has posted ideas and that's good.

You have pretty well insulted the rest of us who might not have looked in this section from the time you posted until now or who thought Fitz was doing fine and didn't want to step on him.

5 comments pertaining to your issues.

    - XP is not real fond of old hardware and some of the devices you mention point to it being old hardware. Probably can be dealt with but expect other odd happenings down the road.

    - Putting SP2 on a system that is not clean and working properly is not something I would ever do or recommend.

    - you should really check the event logs (start => run => eventvwr.msc) for errors or warnings that give more detail. Hopefully there will be something there.

    - the sort of sudden hardware issue you speak of is often enough a hardware failure (kbd or connector probably) that you really need to test with a different one.

    - Walmart sells a USB gadget that will let you plug into a USB port and then use any/all of the 4 ports on the gadget. Don't remember the exact cost but not expensive. It has it's own power supply so really not dependent on the PC to supply much other than a viable USB connection.

    Sorry

Beg your pardon Newt, I tend to be terribly impatient! Thanks for looking at this. I should mention that I originally searched this site before posting and found someone who had this EXACT same problem. "Iceolated" (a senior member) posted on 4/29/04 regarding this issue but his resolution was to format the drive. He never posted after the fact whether or not that resolved the issue. I assume it did because, as in his case, all hardware was working fine then BANG.

I agree with you that, since XP doesn't like old hardware, we'll probably run into more issues with this pc over time. If I assume this problem is software and not hardware related, do you really think putting SP2 on is a bad idea? What about another suggestion from Microsoft about upgrading the bios?

I will pass on your recommendations to check out event log and purchase USB hub. He's been talking about buying a new pc, maybe it's time!

    Thanks again,

    Carolyn
