What program does XP home sp-2 use to un-compress zip files. In my file types under folder options it only says "compressed (zipped) folders" not a file name. I got a file with the extension of .rar from Microsoft support and found winrar to open it, but am wondering if XP doesn't have something to open it with. If not are there any free programs that anyone knows of to do the job. Winrar is only free for 30 days.
I was thinking if there is some kind of free catch all program for compressed files or if XP has one built in i would like to use that. I am thinking XP must be able to open it if MS support sent it to me.

Lots of free un-zipping software listed on this page, many of which handle rar files.

In XP, once it's on the hard drive, right click and select "Extract All. "

Steve, That only works with Zip files. With the rar files it's not an option. It does ask to "open with" but there is nothing in that list that would apply. That's why I thought if I knew what the program is that MS uses to unzip zip files, I could try that, but I don't know the name of that program. It's interesting that I got that file from MS support, so you would think I have something in XP to open it with.

I've never had any luck opening .rar files with anything that XP has on tap. I've tried expand.exe and extract.exe, which isn't native to XP, but to Win9X, and neither can do it.

Odd that they sent it to challenge you to find a way to open it.

Plenty of freeware out there for the job though.

    Hi Floyd -

Zip Genius (from the link provided by Miz above) will do .rar files but it is huge (9312KB). Probably much more than most people really need.

Zip Central (also available at the above link and only about 15% the size of ZG.) is what I have been using for years with no problems. I don't know, however, if it handles .rar files as I've never had one to open.

    HTH a little. :)

Thanks for all the suggestions. I too find it interesting that MS would send me a compressed file they can't open with a Widows product.
I did find a free program called TUGZip and seems to work fine.
    Thanks again
