I have had a virus problem even though I have had Norton System Works 2005 installed, and do not download anything questionable, and also delete any e-mail messsages I do not feel are from "good" sources. In any case, I finally got rid of the viruses (23 known infected files) which resulted in deleting some files in the registry and Windows\System32 folder.

Now I find I cannot load some programs from my D: drive (the first of two CD drives I have on my system). I get a small error screen that states, "The installshield Engine (iKernel.exe) could not be launched. The RPC server is unavailable. "

This puts me at a great disadvantage Virus protectionwise, as I cannot load McAfee VirusScan. I have been on line with their tech. people and spent many hours following their instructions, many times scanning and deleting various files that the Virus scan did not seem to think were bad. Nothing works, I still cannot load a fresh Anti Virus prgram - including my original copy of Norton System Works 2005. I have loaded another program - just to see if anything would load - such as Britannica Encyclopedia, and it went smoothly. Why can I not load system related software - and what is the RPC server?

Go to Start > Run > type services.msc (enter) and check that Remote Procedure Call (RPC) is started. It may have gotten disabled by mistake.

I have a feeling there will be more to it than this since you have had viral problems. Perhaps if you post what specific virus you had and what you did to fix it, someone more hep will chime in with better advice.

Cannot load from CD Drive (Drive D:)

Thanks for the advice. I went to the Services screen and tried to get the RPC locater (RPC itself was started and supposedly running) started (is was listed as not active, when I tried to start it manually - via the Properties facility, I got a small error screen that stated, "Cannot start the Remote Procedure Call (RPC) service on local computer.
Error 1068 The dependency service or group failed to start.

I then changed the properties to Automatic start and rebooted and got the same result.

I have no idea what the name of the virus(s) I had, nor which files they infected, the program that detected them also deleted them, and I did not know enough to try to find out more about them. All I know is that they infected both System32 and Registry files.

Thanks for your help. If I find the solution, I will post it here for anyone who might have a similar problem.

I would run System File Checker if you have not already done so - it won't do any hard and may possibly resolve your problem.

Start > Run > type in sfc /scannow - note the space and have your XP CD handy.

SFC will run and exit without any closing dialogue. To see which, if any files have been replaced look in Event Viewer.

Thanks for your response. I ran the scan, which went quietly on for about five minutes, and ended without any notice on the screen, as you indicated. I then opened Event Viewer, and looked at the listings for three categories, and must admit, I have no idea what I was looking at. There were many earlier errors and warnings, but nothing listed for the period covered by the scan. I do not know what this means.

    Thanks, again.

Well, I finally got it solved. I tried both of those last two suggestions, but I could not get very far with either, as I got screens indicating my system does not respond as it s should. In any case, the problem was apparently related to the services. The RPC service would not start, and looking at its properties, no dependency was indicated in the many times I looked, but later, dependency on the last service (workstation?) was indicated, and it was not running. I got that started, which allowed me to start the RPC thing. All is now well as far as loading from the CD drive. Thanks, guys, for your help and sympathy.
