It seems to me that when scanning emails AVG has to be set to scan both incoming and outgoing, not one independant of the other.

    Is that correct?

I have set AVG to scan incoming email only but with that setting it neither scans incoming or outgoing.

I have found on occasions that when scanning outgoing emails it can take forever, hence my attempts/desire to only scan incoming.

Perhaps THIS by Steve (many use his dbx.extraction program) HERE article might shed some light and really the AVG (or others) scanning of emails is really a non essential superflous gimmickry!!!

Does this article also imply that to scan both in and out that it is done through the temp files?

I have AVG Pro and have only POP3 servers set for scanning in Outlook 2003. AVG stamps my mail in and out but I have not configured the smtp ports and have had no problems with sending/receiving the mail.

    AVG Config with OE

I know this doesn't answer your last question but maybe look at your configurations in OE to make sure they are set correctly. I have checked my servers and they are POP3 only.
