    Hello,

I'm running Windows 98 SE and my problem is that the Favorites folder located in C:\Windows has been altered by me mistakenly. I simply replaced it with my favorite URLs of Windows XP. Now, I cannot access it using some third-party browsers like NetCaptor or MyIE.

There is no star on that Favorites folder now.

Could anyone tell me how to fix this or send me a URL where I could download an intact Favorites folder, please?

    Thanks! Ralf

    Re-installing browser won't help

I did it, but it doesn't work. It seems to be a system related problem and not the browser.

Did you recreate the C:\Windows\Favorite folder and copy your regular favorites there?

Steve, it also doesn't work. I gave it a try already. I think it has to be a folder which has been created by Windows 98. If someone sent me an empty Favorites folder, this might be of help.

I'm not 100% sure about this but in the Favorites folder, there should be a hidden file desktop.ini. This file is telling Windows how the folder should look and possibly which applications use the folder.

If You get someone to mail that file to You, from a Favorites folder on Win98SE, when You put it in Your folder, it will again look like a star and it will hopefully work.

If you just need an empty "Favorites" folder ...
    - Boot to DOS from a Win98 floppy boot disk
    - at the prompt type
    deltree /y C:\Windows\Favori~1\
then reboot - Windows will make you a new, empty folder "Favorites "
    regards

In IE, Tools->Options->Settings. What does the Current Location say? If it's something other than C:\Windows\Favorites->Change it.

There is a location of Temporary Internet Files which is not much to do with my non-working Favorites, I guess.
Don't you know what was wrong with that command "deltree /y C:\Windows\Favori~1\ "? Maybe it was a good idea to re-create the Favorites folder.

ralfska--I have not done it, but based on what you say, it would seem you have little to lose.
Put (drag and drop) the inaccessible Favorites folder into the Recycle bin. Reboot. Now you should have a new Favorites folder. (I can't remember. Does Win98's folder have the star on it? Does not matter.)
Now copy the individual URL's from the XP Favorites into that new Win98 folder. In other words you are not moving the WinXP folder, but rather copying the contents of the WinXP folder.
Click within the WinXP Favorites folder, simultaneously click Control+A, then Control+C, move your cursor to the empty Win98 Favorites folder, click in it, then simultaneously click Control+V. That should copy the the contents.

Note : You may need to type :
    C:\Windows\deltree.exe /y C:\Favori~1\*.*
