I am assisting with problems on a 98 computer - around 10 mins after startup, the OS says the program (what ever is open) has preformed an illegal operation and has to shut down. Even if one shuts down the program the screen freezes. Now we have to wait a half hour before it can be restarted as if one boots right away it will get part way then stall. I am thinking of changing out all the fans....does this sound like a heat problem?

Regular virus updates with AVG; regular windows updates; regular checks with adaware and spybot. Computer is clean of all spyware. Very few programs running at startup or after.

    Any input welcome

Yes it does. Clogged filter(s), bad cpu fan if it has one, bad power supply fan, bad case fan(s) are all very possible suspects.

This was posted in the 2000/2003 section but since you say the PC is 98, moving the thread there.

Thanks Newt, that is what I was thinking. I already cleaned everything out. Thanks for switching over to 98 forum - I had thought that is where I put it....strange.

    Anyway, have a great day
