I have Windows 98. When I go to shut it down it freezes when it gets to the part where it says "Mircrosoft Windows 98 Windows is shutting down." Then I have to cut it off by hand on the tower. Any solutions to this problem will be appreciated.

Try going to Start>>run>> type msconfig, click ok, click the advanced button, put a check in "disable fast shutdown" click ok, click apply, click ok, click yes.

When I click on the advanced button I didn't see the option "disable fast shutdown ". The options listed where these settings:
    Disable System ROM Breakpoint
    Disable Virtual HD IRQ
    EMM Exclude A000-FFFF
    Force Compatibility mode disk access
    VGA 640 x 480 x 16
    Enable Startup Menu
    Disable Scandisk after bad shutdown
    Limit memory to MB
    Disable UDF file system
Enable Pentium F0 (Lock CmpXchg) workaround

    Try these:
Close everything (until you are at the desktop), before shutting down.

Still no luck, right-click on the programs in the System Tray (bottom right corner where the time is located) and Exit/Close the programs.

Still no luck. Try running AdAware and Spybot, if you do not have them already.

Lastly, there is a shutdown patch at Microsoft.

I closed all the programs in the system tray. Then it shut down properly a couple of times after that it went back shutting down wrong again. I ran Adware and Spybot and then tried shutting down again. Now it is shutting down fine. Thanks for you help.

    Hi Realisticone,
I just got done reading your past post history and see that this problem has plagued you in the past. You have already been made aware of the downfall or bad effects that running certain programs or devices either at startup (allowing then to sit in the systray) or during the normal course of tasks you may have done and existed from. These can be fussy. The unnecessary ones may need to be stopped from loading at startup. The fussy ones may need to be updated or not ran at all. You have also been introduced to the risks and hazards of malware/adware and have since become familiar with lavasofts adaware, spybot and hijackthis routines. I also noted that you have had a history of Kazza (p2p) usage along with chat programs such as aim, messenger and yahoo. While the chat programs may not be a problem if ran when you choose rather than autostarted and allowed to run in the background whether you need them or not....the File_p2p_share/downloading-uploading programs are another matter altogether. Caution and security safeties must always be taken when using these.

While you have not been specific about which fussy programs/applications and services where still designated as running during your botched shutdown attempts and while I do hope this problem does not come up yet again for you. You may wish to go back into the archives of past posts and see about eliminating these startups for good. Any future malware/adware infestations can also be cut down or eliminated altogether by these programs in combination with other security tools. We have a great "Security Forum" and Subforum with stickies that should be reviewed. These pretty well cover the gambit on Virus/malware/adware problems and how to avoid them.
    -------
Did you go online for a virus scan? While I know you have and use adaware/spybot and a Norton, I don't know if you have used the latest versions and the most recent updated dats. I know the last fight you fought with this issue was a combination (virus and hijack "Trojan/Worm ") related. An online scan or two is also recommended just for added security and peace of mind. A list and these links can be found on one of those pinned up stickies in the security forum.
    --------
While I'm most happy to see your most recent bout with these critters has been taken care of and that Mattman's suggestion for pinning this down helped you to zero in on and eventually eliminate the problem, please keep in mind all of the above. Your problem did seem to be a bit random, meaning you could cure it for a time but it would boomerang back.
    This is a subliminal message....Security Forum....security forum .....online virus scan....latest versioned spybot....ewwwww...spookie......latest versioned hijackthis log.....booga booga....End of message... :) ---------

    ---------

    To sum up....
Thank you so much for taking the time to update your post with the final outcome and sharing this experience.

And thank you mattman for helping to point him/her in the right dirrection.

    =====For the archives=====
Win98xx is infamous for startup/shutdown issues. The Help-net archives are spilling over to the brim with the how-to's for using a process of elimination and msconfig tool to help pin down where the trouble may be coming from. Here's just a few:
