As of today, whenever I close Outlook (XP version) on either my desktop (Win2000) or laptop (WinXP) I get a messagebox referring to WindowsFormsParkingWindow. The text is along the lines of:

The instruction at "0x0138a9fe" referenced memory at "0x016c38b8 ". The memory could not be "read ". Click OK to terminate the program

The memory addresses are different on the two PCs and clicking OK clears it.

The only common change I can think of was updating Steganos Security Suite from 7.0.7 to 7.0.9 last night. No extra message yesterday, but there is today.

Anyone else found this? I'll not even bother contacting Steganos as they didn't reply to my last support query (despite several chase-up emails).

start => run => eventvwr.msc and check your event logs. There should be entries related to those incidents with lots more detail.

When you find one, click it open, click on the icon below the up/down arrows to send a text copy to your clipboard, and paste the results here. If you have quite a few (probably) we only need to see a couple unless they are somewhat different in more than the memory location.

You have a .NET application hooked into outlook. This could be an outlook add-in, or an external program thats latching open windows. This is 'not normal'. What have you installed thats a .net app?

You should be getting a user.dmp or a mini.dmp or something when that happens. You can use the dump tool (in my sig below) to get analysis.

I cleared out the Event Viewer, opened Outlook, closed it and OK'd the messagebox. There's just one entry under System:

    Event Type: Information
    Event Source: Application Popup
    Event Category: None
    Event ID: 26
    Date: 11/12/2004
    Time: 10:26:51
    User: N/A
    Computer: SBC-CZ2ELJN7P3L
    Description:
Application popup: WindowsFormsParkingWindow: OUTLOOK.EXE - Application Error : The instruction at "0x0162a9fe" referenced memory at "0x01953890 ". The memory could not be "read ".

Click on OK to terminate the program

    Any help?

I'll give it a try and post the results - need to download and install the MS debugging tools first.

    Joe,

I've downloaded your tool but there's no DMP file anywhere on my hard drive

I've also downloaded and installed the debug tool on the link you gave, but I'm not sure how to use it.

As far as installed software, I updated MindManager (X5Pro) yesterday, but the problem reared it's head before. In fact, as that was an application installed just a week ago (and, on my laptop, where I found the problem first, it was the first time I'd run Outlook since) I went to the Mindjet website to see if there was an issue reported there - it wasn't, but there was an update so I tried it just in case - no change. My desktop has been running with MindManager for over a week with no Outlook issue until yesterday. As I said above, the only change to my desktop was updating Steganos Security. I can only assume the latest version has put a new hook into Outlook which isn't behaving.

    Launch outlook.
    open a dos prompt
    cd\program files\debugging tools for windows
    adplus -crash -pn outlook.exe

    reproduce the phenomenon

ADPLUS will wake up and get snotty, writing out a DMP file with some horrifically long name. You want the OUTLOOK_SECOND_CHANCE_ACCESS_VIOLATION_blahlbah.dmp that will be created in the debuggers directory.

Run the dump tool on it, and lets see what we got.

Or, just uninstall that suspect software and see if the problem goes away.

I had to move the DMP file to the root of C: to get the debugwiz.exe to pick up the full path. When I did get it to run, it reports incorrect symbols. Notwithsatnding, here's the text of the file:

My untrained eye picks up references to a problem with Steganos...

You are correct sir. UI.DLL is causing your crash. Since it literally has the word ui!Steganos::CreateUI right in it.. no need to think very hard about it.

Take that DMP to steganos and tell them to fix thier bug.

As a side note, that is a common bug for .NET programmers, its caused by being sloppy with custom user control. Google for that WindowsFormsParkingWindow, youll find a bazillion hits on programmers trying to figure out what they did wrong.

    Joe,

Thanks. I've reported the bug to them, though I'll wait until I get a reply before firing that dump to them. The last time I needed their support, they weren't very forthcoming.

    Thanks again.

Steganos have responded and agreed it's a bug in their program. The fix is to uncheck the Staganos_SSS7_SEE AddIn within Outlook. Fixed! They say they'll be issueing an update to fix the bug properly asap.

v7.1 released which seems to address the issue - I've been able to re-add the add-in without the problem reappearing on my laptop (WinXP) - will check tonight on my desktop (Win2k).
