Sorry to resend this but I forgot to ask for a notification.

I have just upgraded to Windows Media Player 10 fro 9 because I could not get 9 to play wmv files on my XP system - or so I thought. The new player 10 will not play them either while in netscape 7.2. If I save the files and go back to windows, the files play fine. In both XP and NS the Windows Media Player is listed as the default player for wmv files. But I cannot click on an email attachment wmv file and have it play in NS. Any suggestions?

WMP opens as the default NS player when I click on a wmv file attached to an email, but it says that the selected file has a scheme which is not recognized by WMP.

I get very few such links, so if the format is correct, and it appears to be, you should be able to open WMP, download the file, and go.
I would have to see such file. I would right click on the link, and look at ther Property. You may get an idea about what it is.
Can you copy a link, and post it here?

Whatever you are clicking is a link to an external file. I wanted to check if it is ok or not. I know that with some audio files, there are two steps, only one of which is played. I am listening to some music, in .mp3 format, but there is actually a playlist file, .m3u or .pls format. For some reason, iTunes has been splitting the introduction from the actual file, and will play only the intro. The actual music is separated. Winamp handles the two in succession, as it should be. I don't know what WMP does, but I got one .wmv file which I received from my son. But he has a website, which I don't. One needs to have the file from the web. If I send you a link to mine, it won't work, because I have it just on my hard drive.

I appreciate the time you are taking with me, but again, I don't think I know what you are saying. If I had your email address I could send you the email to which the wmv file is attached - or I could just send the wmv file. But otherwise I don't know how to send a "link" to the wmv file. More help?

    rong103,

If the WMV file is sent as an attachment, all that is necessary is to double click the file. Netscape will query as to how to handle the file. You should select:
When a file of this type is encountered
Open it using the default application.

If WMPlayer is set as the default player for WMV file in Netscape 7.2 is it listed as: video/x-ms-wmv?
    See these Screen Shots

Double check to ensure that you have set WMP 10 as the default player for WMV files in: Tools | Options | File Types

This works for me using WMP 9.

    HTH,

    Ramona

The wmv file comes to me as an email attachment; when I double-click on it a popup screen says that "the selected file has a scheme that is not recognized by WMP . . ., and asks if I want the player to try to play the file" - if I click "yes ", a popup screen says that "WMP cannot play the file because the specified protocol is not supported ".

In WMP10, at Info Center/options/File types, the box for wmv file is checked as the file type for WMP10 to be the default player.

In NS7.2, I cannot find a Tools/Options/File Types. I do find edit/preferences/navigator/helper applications where video/x-ms-wmv is listed to be opened using the default application and the WMP icon is shown but it does not use the words that WMP is the default application.

Where is the suggested Tools/Options/File Types to be found? In my NS7.2 navigator window, under Tools is listed search, cookie manager, popup manager, etc. Nowhere under File, Edit, View, Go, etc., . . ., is there an Option.

On the mail window, under Tools is listed search messages, search addresses, message filters, etc. Nowhere under File, Edit, View, Go, . . ., is there an Option.

Are we on the same page?

    rong103,

I was referring to settings in WMP 10... Sorry if I confused you.

Look at this Registry Key to ensure Netscape 7.2 is listed (NETSCP.EXE)
    Start | Run | Regedit

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\MediaPlayer\ShimInclusionList\NETSCP.EXE

Next: check this key to ensure that NETSCP.EXE is NOT listed:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\MediaPlayer\ShimExclusionList

Check out this page for additional information on WMP. It contains many workarounds, links, and tips for using the player:
    http://www.nwlink.com/~zachd/pss/pss.html
Send me the attached WMV file, and I'll see if it works for me. I will send you a PM with my email address.

    HTH,

    Ramona

I saved the wmv attachment and it plays fine when I double-click it - WMP comes up and plays it.

I Will send the wmv file when I receive your PM.

    Ramona,
I did not have any mail link, but I had a link at my ISP website, for short movies. I pick just one which opened WMP10 using either Netscape7.2 and Mozilla1.8a6 (nightly). And, it went one with its business and played nicely, without having to save the file.
I was able to determine the format, by right clicking on the website link, and looking at the properties. I sent the above link to another e-mail address of mine, and it worked as well as directly from the website.
However, I noticed that the file was .mov, which, I believe, Quicktime format, it 1208oceans12.mov.
What conclusion can you draw from this, and, is there any connection with the original problem?

    Ramona sent me the following:

    Hi Ron,

Here's the skinny, I had you send the file to my Netscape 7.2 email address. I was able to open the C4.wmv file within the Mail program. I didn't have to save it to the HDD??? (Cool transformer!)

I think we covered this on the Forum, but in your
Edit | Preferences | Navigator | Helper Applications - you do have this helper application listed:
video/x-ms-wmv, and if so, you have selected "Open with default player "? I think I asked this and you said yes, but just wanted to be clear.

BTW, I have pneumonia, and won't be on the Forum for a while, so also ask Westside if you can send this to him. He loves a mystery, and this certainly is one. The only other advice I have is to uninstall WMP10, and reinstall. Remember that I am using WMP9... I am too ill to sit up very long, so I don't want to leave you hanging.

I have tried all the above and other things in various combinations and can find no repeatability in anything. I can get the file to play without saving it, but given +/- Star Downloader, +/- various right key, left key, double-click combinations, etc., I can not predict when/if the file will open. Once it opens by whatever cobination of strokes, it will open fairly repeatably until I exit NS and re-enter. It's just all very spoky. Seems like NS ought to either handle the file or give me the option of specifying a program to open it. But I can't even get to the drop down menu to select an opener with repeatability. I could have written this not wrt wpd documents just as well as for wmv files. I am trying to use NS 7.2, WMP 10, and WP 11 with XP sp2 (just for the record).

    Hi,
Ramona is under the weather, and she sent me the file. I tried everything I had changing Windows File Associations, and trying other music players which could handle .wmv format.
Under normal conditions, i.e. with WMP10 I got the same error that you did.
This happened with NS7.1, 7.2, moz1.7.3, and the 1.8a.x guys. WMP10 opened with the file named Inbox, and the transport error.
But if I disabled the .wmv format in WMP10, and then open with JetAudio and the helper file association set to use JetAudio, it worked fine. I am pretty sure that it would work with my other compatible players. So, Jet Audio sees the correct transport.
But, if you want things to work with no problem, use Thunderbird. Either 0.9 and 1.0 ask me if i want o open the file with WMP 10, and it starts right off without needing a download.
Ramona does not know the entire story, that's what I could do. May be Ramona has some idea why. I don't know how she got the file to open correctly with 7.1.
I have been at it for an hour and a half, and, obviously there is some mystery, but I don't want to lose sleep over this.
But, I must say that it is a very funny clip. Don't get frustrated, and play it whenever you get in a bad mood.

    Fulvio
