    hi there
I run XP with SP2 and have a minor problem and a slightly less minor problem.
first one is that i always have to type a password to log into my machine even though i'm the only one who uses it and have never setup a password.
it seems there are 3 accounts on my pc, administrator, me (both with adfmin privilleges) and guest (which is never used).
how do i remove the password prompt from the bootup procedure?

the other problem is that sometimes, more often than not these days, is that when my machine boots up it runs exceptionally slow and often hangs until i "end process" called "svchost" with the username of "system ". As soon as that is ended the machine runs the way it should, except that my sound then doesnt work until rebooted.
This can sometimes mean several reboots and scandisks to get the machine running properly with sound.

does any one have any idea about either???

    many thanks
    David

For your log in, go to Control Panel> User Accounts and fix it the way you want it.

For your service host problem, run the spyware/adware scanners from the Quicklinks, particularly Spybot & AdAware. Post back and let us know how if that improves your system performance.

I tried using that methoid of removing the password prompt. Unfortunately, there is no delete account option, and no way that i can see that will allow me to alter the accounts other than "change password ". Since no password is specified and "enter" allows me to log in i don't think that's what i'm after.

As for the other problem, i often run spybot and spysweeper and my machine is almost always ad free. I ran them again and found nothing, so i'm still at a loss!!!

darich - for the performance issue, you could easily have gotten critters that your spyware removers don't see. Maybe not but it surely sounds like it.

Open a new thread in the security section with just the performance issue and give us two pieces of information.

First, download Hijackthis (see quicklinks in my signature) and store it in a permenant folder other than any temp or the desktop. Then run it and generate a log. Post the entire log contents in your new post.

If you run XP-Pro (and it always helps with XP to specify which version) open a cmd prompt and put in the following then post the contents of the text file you will create.
    Code:
    tasklist /svc > c:\tasklist.txt
Unfortunately, XP-home does not have tasklist.exe but if you need it there are a few places on the net to download a copy and it runs well enough on XP-home to generate a list of running services.

    Thanks all.
It seems that the problem with the file in my task manager was something to do with my sound card. I removed the card and its drivers and now use the onboard sound. No problems since.

As for the login issue.......I downloaded the tweakUI as suggested by Newt and managed to switch it to auto log in.

    thanks again!!!
    Cheers
    David

    Thanks for the update David.

It was BearNunya who recommended TweakUI though.
