    Hi Folks

I have updated my Dell laptop from Win 2000 to Win Xp Pro. Now unfortunately the USB port will not work. There is only one USB port on the laptop. I am unable to connect to the net on it as my Modem is a USB device.

If i go to Device Manager then under " Universal Serial Bus Controllers " it shows me only two items :

Standard Universal PCI to USB Host Controller

    and

    USB Root Hub

Both according to Windows are working properly. Can anyone point me in the right direction please ?

What else do you need to know from me to be able to help!?

    Many thanks in anticipation :)

Try loading the chipset drivers off the Dell cd that you should have. If not, get em from Dell.com.

Did you upgrade win2k or did you do a fresh install of XP? If you did a fresh install then grab the file in the link and install it.

Ok i installed the Chipset Driver and rebooted. Now in Device manager under " Universal Serial Bus Controllers " it shows me the two items :

    Intel(R) 82801CA/CAM USB Universal Host Controller - 2482

    and

    USB Root Hub

Unfortunately still nothing happens when i plug in a "plug and play" item into the USB port.

What is the next thing to check please ?

Do you have ALL the MS Updates installed. Must have at least SP1 to use USB2. Plus there is an additional USB patch at MS updates.

    Hi again

I have looked and it has SP1 installed already. I have the Security Update Cd to Feb 2004 which i am currently installing but it has only deteced required updates for Direct X 9 and Windows Media Player 9 Series and " Update Rollup for Microsoft Windows XP ". I am installing them as a matter of course right now but im pessimistic that they will cure the problem im having. I am unable to connect to the net on the laptop because the modem is a USB one. It has an internal modem that i could configure ( dialup ), but id prefer to use my Broadband USB Modem to download the updates for obvious reasons. Having said that, if you think that using dialup to conect to Windows Update is the best course of action then i`ll do it. Is there anything else obvious to check ? I do remember clicking " Add Hardware " before you pointed me to the correct Chipset driver. Windows found something ( i cannot remember what ) but i think it may of been the chipset ? It installed the hardware through the wizard automatically but with no apparent affects to the USB or anything else!?

    What would you do ?

Thanks again, i hope you can bear with me :)

    OK

I configured the internal modem and connected to Windows Update. There were no hardware drivers available except an updated Modem driver. All the updates were security ones, nothing else. I uninstalled the Chipset Driver and re-installed it again. Upon rebooting it found the USB Hub and said that it was ready for use. Still nothing happens when i plug in a usb device :(.

If anyone can help me then id be most grateful. Even if its opinion, im sat here banging my head against a brick wall :(.

The Laptop is a Dell Latitude C610

    Service Tag: 66D0D0J
    Service Code: 13445342947

Im now going to try uninstalling Windows and try another new installation :(

EDIT : Ive looked in the BIOS and this is what i found on page 4 of 7

    ***********BASIC DEVICE CONFIGURATION**************

    Serial Port : COM2
    Infrared Data Port : Disabled

    Parallel Mode : ECP
    Audio Mode : Full Duplex

    Keyboard Click : Disabled
    Num lock : Disabled
Enable Keypad : Only By Fn Key
External Hot Key : Scroll Lock
USB Legacy : Disabled ( says this is for a USB keyboard on older OS`s i have enabled it and retried, it makes no difference )

    Pointing Device : PS/2 Mouse

Primary Video : Dock Video Card

    MiniPCI Device : Not Installed

I`ll post back and let you all know the result.

    Thanks

I have now installed Everest to check the system specs

    The Chipset is :

North Bridge : Intel Almador i830MP
    South Bridge : Intel 82801CAM ICH3-M

Ive just downloaded a 830 series chipset driver from Intel and installed it - no different AARGH!

After rebooting it installs the Chipset driver ok and then displays " searching for drivers " Its at this point where it stops. Id expect it to say " your hardware is ready for use " or similar but it stops at the aforementioned point.

Well im beat and its 01.30AM here :(

I hope that someone can help please! ??? :)

    Thanks

    Hey Rich D:

Have you tried more than one USB device?

Have you tried a different USB cable?

Are the USB device drivers installed?

Each USB device usually comes with drivers on CD or Floppy. Some of them are very choosey about what happens first. Drivers first, then connect device.

    Hope you get it fixed.

Don't forget, the laptop is a fresh install, drivers may not have loaded correctly.

    From Microsoft's article ID 297402

"When you attach a universal serial bus (USB) device, Microsoft Windows may be unable to locate the driver files needed for the device.

    CAUSE
This behavior can occur if Windows is looking in the incorrect location for the device driver. After you connect the USB device to a USB port, Windows attempts to find the device in the Windows driver database. If Windows is unable to locate the driver files needed for the device, you receive a message asking you to insert your Windows operating system compact disc, or to specify the location of the drivers to complete the installation. If you do not specify the correct location, Windows cannot find the driver files that it needs.

NOTE: After the correct driver files have been loaded, Windows does not normally ask for the location of the driver files again.

To resolve this issue, specify the correct location for the device drivers.

If Windows NT or 2000 is installed on your computer, insert the CD, and then specify the following location
    DRIVE:\i386
where DRIVE is the letter of your CD-ROM drive "

I'd give this a try, it appears to be OS specific, but NT and XP are brothers, I don't think anything bad can happen.

The CD they are referring to would be in your case the XP CD, so, when Windows starts looking for the drivers again, point it to your CD drive\I386.

Hope this helps, let us know either, we can keep or stop digging.

    Martin

Thanks Martin your reply is much appreciated :) Im going to try as you suggest but im not getting prompted for a driver file at all for anything i plug in. I dont get prompted for anything whatsoever when i plug in a USB device at present. I just plug it in and it sits there doing nothing.

I have downloaded all of the updates for SP1 now using a dialup connection so we can rule that out as a problem. All is left now is to download SP2. I have installed an Intel 830 series Chipset driver that is XP Pro compatible direct from Intel. I have tried device manager/Uninstall on the "USB Controller" then reinstalling the driver several times. Upon rebooting it definitely says that the USB Root Hub has been found and is ready for use. All i have listed is,

    Intel(R) 82801CA/CAM USB Universal Host Controller - 2482

    and

    USB Root Hub

..........in System/device manager. Both are "working properly" according to Windows. Should there only be these two items in this particular section? On my desktop i have " Generic USB Hub " listed too. Im afraid this is above my understanding.

I`ll keep trying here but im running out of options. :(

    Thanks again

    Rich D: You asked:
I really can't answer that, I have 16 items there, as well as 4 entries in device manager for my HP USB printer that the Icons seem to indicate they are USB device drivers.

The two entries below are my Motherboard VIA chipset USB drivers that show up in device manager, I would think you should have something similar from Intel that would be in your device manager.

Via Rev 5 or later USB Universal Host Controller
Via USB 2 Enhanced Host Controller

Try this, go to control panel with the device connected, click install new hardware, let Windows search, If asked, tell Windows it is already connected, see if it finds it. If so, maybe you can point it to the drivers on the XP CD. If your CD drive is "D ", point it to D:\i386. Also, open your Dell CD in explorer and see if you can find USB drivers there if the XP CD does not help.

Other than that, for now, I'm out of ideas. Let us know what happens, if this doesn't work, maybe somebody on the board can think up something else.

    Good Luck,

    Martin

    Thanks Martin,

Did as you suggested but it didnt find any hardware as we expected it wouldnt.

Another probably unrelated thing i have found is that in device manager under " Monitors " i have " Default Monitor " listed four times ??

Also in device manager under " PCMCIA adapters " i have " Texas Instruments PCI-1420 Cardbus Controller " listed twice ??

I think the phrase " A little knowledge can be dangerous " applies to me here!

Surely one of you MVP`s must know something im missing ?

    Cheers

This post by mflynn has been used successfully in the past. I had the same problems after getting sp2. Removing all the USB listings in device manager worked for me.

    Scroll down to post #9.

Many thanks Bill. I have followed the post you suggested to the letter. Had no impact on the USB problem. I found duplicates in monitor and uninstalled them. Upon rebooting they were there again - all four of them!

Im going to ask on the Dell BBS. this is ridiculous, three days struggling now i hate being beaten by these things :(

Your input was much appreciated all the same

    All the best :)

Ok at last after four days of struggling and head scratching its sorted! :)

I tried another powered hub and it works. It would seem that the Belkin powered hub im using on my desktop isnt compatible with my laptop ??. It still works fine on my desktop pc but does nothing at all on the laptop. A lot of wasted time but im pleased its sorted at last. Maybe it has something to do with the Belkin hub being a USB 2.0 one ? Thing is my desktop has USB 1.1 hubs and so does the laptop!

Many thanks for your time and effort folks :)

Check in the computer BIOS to see if the USB port is enabled. With all the drivers loaded from WinXP the USB should work even without all the updates.
