Have you had it on before and are trying a reinstall or is this the first time?

What media are you trying to install from?

As an OEM i put Nortons Internet Security (containing Norton Antivirus) on all PCs i build and i also sell it by the truckload to other clients.

From experience so far, Nortons 2004 does not always work correctly in Windows 98 and much prefers 2000 and up.

Also a common reason i have had problems installing NAV is if the PC already has a virus on it. The best way if it is at all possible, to remove a virus from a hard drive that is infected and wont accept antivirus software, it to put the drive in another PC as a secondary drive and scan it from there. Make sure the other PC has the latest virus definitions and it will be safe to do.

You already having a virus could also explain why auto protect stopped working the first time.

If you cant put your drive in another PC to scan it for viruses or dont wish to try that, try this free stand alone antivirus scanner provided by McAfee.

It is called stinger and will remove most curent well known viruses.

    Bob,

My Norton 2003 SystemWorks recently stopped the auto protect also. All I did was unistall 2003 completely and reinstall. Everything works just fine now. You may want to give that a try.

Symantec recently issued some new updates that have to do with SP2 for XP. I winder if that is causing the auto-protect to quit on the older OSes? Try running Live Update manually. You may be prompted for a reboot. I have had several instances where Norton has acted goofy until a manual Live Update was run and the PC rebooted- as if Norton is trying to tell us that it needs some attention, but doesn't know how!

I wouldn't uninstall Norton and reinstall except as a very last resort, and if you go this route, disconnect from the Internet! Then reconnect and run Live Update over and over until there is nothing left. That may be what solved the problems mentioned- after reinstalling, LU was able to download and install, and got the reboot it wanted.

Next time you have a problem with AutoProtect, make sure AutoProtect is checked in Options on the Norton AV program window.

The recent updates from Symantec have been spooky to say the least. While installing the first load, I was prompted twice to do a second LiveUpdate session. Before I did that, I noticed that Intrusion Detection was turned off and when I tried to restart, I was told that I didn't have enough privileges (which I had). After the second LiveUpdate session, Intrusion Detection had been turned on again.

It seems like a good idea to always check the settings after running LiveUpdate!

Norton Intrusion Detection is part of Norton Internet Security. If You have the stand alone Norton AntiVirus, You don't have it.

    Bob,
    You're welcome ...... :) ...... !

Sorry for adding to the confusion but it seems to me like Symantec are barely keeping their noses over the water these days. Updates to NAV and NIS have been delayed by months and when they finally are released ...... ...... !

Norton reinstalls don't work-tech help uselss

I will try to give the short version of my Norton Nightmare. It started with one error message in Live Update (cc files corrupted). Message recommended uninstall, reinstall. Didn't work. After 5 tech calls, uninstalls and attempted reinstalls of System Works & Personal Firewall (both 2004), neither program could be reinstalled . (I spent at least 9 hours on the phone with techs who could not correctly pronounce English words!) Supposedly files were missing. I was directed to edit the registry, delete folders, etc- even told Norton was not compatible with XP SP2. Problems escalated and my spam program wouldn't work. Finally with the 6th call I got the rep to agree to replace NSW and the anti-virus program. I'm confused about whether they will replace the firewall. I cannot believe the problems I have had over this isssue. My computer is now unprotected until I get the replacement CDs. After checking many sites about Norton problems, I can't believe that there are so few media stories about these issues. This situation is a rip-off of their customers. I just sent some letters about the issue to their corporate offices, but I don't expect a reply. I just want to know how Norton can still be getting rave reviews for its programs when so users are having so many problems!

Norton didn't work on my computer with XP

I didn't want to make my reply too long, so I didn't include info on my computer. I have a Dell Pentium III, running Xp with SP2 installed. Before he hung up on me,the first tech told me Norton wasn't compatible with SP2. I also have pest Partol which I run periodically. I went to PcPitstop to scan for viruses to see if that was the problem, and not the Norton programs. The site reported no viruses. PestPatrol reported a few programs, but nothing significant and I have now deleted those.
