My method...Drag and drop them. Whether it be the control panel icon for "printers and faxes" or an individual printer found in here or an actual folder located somewhere on your drive. Just resize the pane so you can see and access your desktop and left_click_hold on the file desired and drag to the desktop and drop. Before closing the main folder in which you used to drag this from, make sure a shortcut was actually made rather than a move of the existing shortcut or folder. If it was moved put it back and use the next method.>> The surest way is to use a right click hold dragNdrop, this results in a popup menu allowing you to choose several options "create shortcut" is one of these options. In some cases merely right clicking on the file/folder in question will give you an option to make a shortcut on the desktop.

The choice is yours so choose your flavor... :)

Never mind, "Dumber" sees you found it! :)

Or right click on the folder and send to or create shortcut.

    Sorry Steve,
I just couldn't resist. I'm sure you've included your thread in order to make this handy for future users and archival retrievals. The same reason I left my thread intact.
