I have a Compaq computer with XP. Purchased a DVD writer internal Drive to replace a DVD player drive. Also have a CD writer drive installed. At Boot up, it says DVD Dual is installed. Shows in Device Manager, With Yellow ball with (!). Right click, Properties, it says. This device cannot start. (Code 10). It shows in My Computer, when DVD writer is set to "Master" and CD writer is set to "Slave ". With (?) showing. It does not show when DVD writer is set to "Slave" and CD writer is set to "Master ". Put the DVD player back in and It works. I have Partition Magic with 4 partitions. Win98SE, WinXp, Page File, and Backups. The DVD writer does no show in 98SE, but the DVD player does. This is the second unit I have tried, so I presume it is not defective units. This is by Micro Advantage. Supposed to support, DVD+R/RW,DVD-R/RW, & CD-RW. Right now it does not support anything.

Not sure this is a cure, but ........

First some logic - since your DVDRW will also burn CD's, the need for a CDRW might be considered marginal. And, if you ever want to copy DVD to DVD, your CDRW isn't going to read DVD's so ...... wouldn't you be better to have the DVD drive and the DVDRW drive as opposed to the DVDRW and the CDRW? Think about that for a while.

Now, as to your problem - you might want to boot to safe mode and go to device manager -> system and remove all instances of all CDROM drives. Then reboot and let Windows re-detect the drives. Your 98 OS will probably show more than 2 drives and although XP may only show 2, they could be the wrong ones. This is a smart practice whenever one is replacing CDROM drives of any type (ie: CDRW, DVD, DVDRW, CDROM) Since you are dual booting I'd recommend you do this in both OS'es.

Would be curious as to what you decide to do re: drive configuration and of course, whether or not this works for you.

    ;)

That's exactly what I just did - good advice. :)

Hey Rockster2U! I installed DVD Rom as "Master', and DVD RW as "Slave'. (This is the way that the Manual recommends). Booted into Safe Mode. Both drives installed. Tested DVD RW with a CD ROM disk, and it worked. Went to XP, and DVD ROM installed. At Boot up, it says DVD Dual is installed, shows in Device Manager, With Yellow ball with (!). Right click, Properties, it says. This device cannot start. (Code 10). It does not show in My Computer. Do not think I want to only use the DVD RW in safe mode.

Well you lost me. Boot to safe mode in 98 and using device manager, remove all CDROM drives then restart and boot to safe mode in XP and using device manager, remove all CDRom Drives. Restart and please advise what happens.

Cannot get into Safe Mode in 98SE. Went into Safe Mode in XP and uninstalled CD drives, rebooted and I am Back where I started. DVD R, and no DVD RW in My Computer. DVD Dual shows in Device Manager, With Yellow ball with (!). Right click, Properties, it says. This device cannot start. (Code 10).

You could check Compaq's website for updated motherboard/chipset drivers which would include the IDE controller drivers (in the meantime you could remove and reinstall the IDE controller drivers). The IDE controller drivers should be listed with the manufacturers name eg. Intel, Via, SIS, etc. If they are listed as "standard IDE controllers" then the chipset drivers are not installed properly.

You could try changing the jumpers from master/slave to both drives as CS (Cable Select).

I am posting A sign on this computer tower which says "DO NOT BREATHE ON THIS TOWER ". After Three days and about Fifteen hours, the DVD RW drive is finally loaded. I am not sure if it was one thing or a combination. I did remove and reinstall the IDE controller drivers. Also there was no drivers listed, that I had not downloaded and installed. None for IDE controllers. The manual for the DVD RW drive says no CS (Cable Select). I removed the drive from the tower several times, and reinstalled. Found an update for a drive on the manufacturers web site. Went to safe mode where it seemed to install the drive even when it was not in regular XP. Loaded the update, and rebooted to XP, and behold, there it is. Loaded the Nero program for burning, with that drive. Will try burning something tomorrow.

As they say, "whatever blows your skirt up ". Glad to hear you've made significant progress and am hopeful that you have it resolved. I think mattman's suggestion re: removing IDE controllers was a particularly good one and you deserve credit for flushing out that upgrade. Keep the sign handy just in case but congratulations.

    ;)

Thanks to everyone for your help. I burned some CD's today and it works. Will have to get some DVD's and see how that works. Plan to do backups to DVD. Hear they will hold 4.7 GB. Should take care of all my backups.

Since we cannot be there with you, it is sometimes a matter of maybe giving some guidelines, then you can spot or try the something that will solve the particular "set" (maybe a combination) of problems. Looks like you succeeded.

    You've done well.
