Not a problem yet but need to verify something.
My son-in-law has Win2K now and wants to upgrade to XP Home. I said i would
get it for him for X-mas but looking at bestbuy under windows XP i saw this
    statement:

"Upgrade to Windows XP Home from Windows 98, Windows 98 Special Edition and Windows Millennium Edition ". Note, theres no mention of Win2K.

Does this mean that you can't go from Win2K to XP Home using just the upgrade
    package?

    Thank you,
    savagcl

    Yes, unfortunately. See here

Win2k > XP home is effectively a 'downgrade' and can't be done using an 'upgrade' CD.

    Ok, saw the chart.
    It says W2K Pro - is there a non-pro for W2K?? :)

One more question (and i'll quit bugging you all about this) :)

His system originally had ME on it. Would it be possible to re-install ME as a
second OS (dual OS) then remove W2K, make ME the single OS and then
    installing XP Home?

I know, lots of juggling, but it is an interesting question.

    thanks,
    savagcl

2K has pro (workstation) and server versions.

Xp-pro will upgrade nicely from 2K.

Trying to upgrade from ME to anything is a bad idea since it can go horribly wrong in many cases and be a nightmare until the PC is scrubbed and loaded from a clean drive.

    Thanks, NEWT.

A scrub and clean restart wouldnt hurt their system at all believe me. With 4
people using the same system it dont take long for it to get bogged down.

If you have an ME disk, you can still get the XP Home upgrade package, but you'll have to start by formatting the hard disk (i.e. clean install). When running XP install, it'll ask for proof of previous MS OS, and will accept the ME CD as proof.

    Arie,

    Thanks a bunch!
I just knew there had to be a way. A clean HD is a dumb HD and should
    accept anything its given.

    Appricate your input,

Any valid OS CD will do the job.
