I have a Xircom CE3B-100BTX network card in my laptop.
Machine a HP was running with Win 2k.
After a drive failure, I decided to install Win XP.
Everythng OK but the Xircom card won't select the correct DHCP address.

Xircom card keeps coming up with 169.254.128.136 when I'm looking for something like 192.168.2.xx
Describes this as an "automatic private address" where as I'm looking for a DHCP assignment.

As I said, the card worked fine in Windows 2000 in the same laptop on the same router

I think its the driver and I have the latest update. This card predates Win XP. Any fixes?

    Cheers all

According to information at http://support.intel.com/support/network/sb/CS-016868.htm you should be using the XP provided drivers. The fact that Intel neither provides a driver for that card nor supports it when installed in XP would not give me a real warm fuzzy feeling.

Note that getting an APIPA assigned (any in the 169.254.x.x range) when you have a DHCP server simply means the PC is not seeing the DHCP server. Usually means it isn't seeing the network at all.

Thanks a lot Newt for coming in on this.

You said all above. Is this what we call "planned redundancy ". It was worth a shot. Looks like I'll have to buy another board.

Its a credit card older style Ethernet 10/100 PCMCIA card, that you push into a slot at the side of a laptop. The Xircom was a very good card, and I think as you said, this is really a driver problem not capable of taking the upgrade to XP.

Newt, you inspired me to try to solve the problem by doing some more research. The answer is provided by Intel below:

"A Xircom network adapter functions when plugged directly into a cable modem/DSL router. The network adapter does not work when an ethernet hub is put between it and the router, meaning the router is connected to the hub and the Xircom network card is connected to the hub via standard CAT 5 cables.

This is caused because some cable modem/DSL Routers do not have an uplink port. This problem can be resolved by using a crossover cable between cable modem/DSL router and ethernet hub. "

Put in an xover cable and hey presto, the card finds the router and DHCP does its magic. A good example of the collabrative nature of this group.
