New W2K CPU replaced my old W98SE unit. After working out re-installation of all programs, hardware transfers, peripherals, etc., I have one remaining problem.
The HP5200C, an older scanner with LPT and USB hookups, will not register on boot up. The software comes with LPT preferred, but, with USB optional. Recent support patches and upgrades allow USB formatting. All these are installed, but I receive error messages on boot that hp5200c.dll was nto found (repaired by Norton WinDoctor), APPLOG reappears on each boot, scanner does not respond by turning on, as it did with old W98 unit.
Changed registry for hpppt file with no path. Hpppt did not seem to have an *.exe file, only a *.dll file.
Have uninstalled and reinstalled software on master HD w/W2K OS, deleted old files on transfered HD which used to have W98SE OS and, now, is a slave.
Any ideas on W2K procedures of which I may not be informed???

    PS
Also did original hook up to LPT1 and had same problem as another poster who described a USB hookup to scanner which prevented booting. Unhooked scanner from LPT port and system booted. Rehooked it and no boot.
Changed BIOS setting for LPT port from PS2 to EPP and no boot. Unhooked it, boot.
Presently, the USB hookup simply does not recognize the scanner, but does allow boot up.

Have you tried with This driver?

Lots of USB devices are real picky and refuse to work unless the software in fully installed before the hardware is hooked up and you need to uninstall and start over.

Will try this version of HP sj 662.exe. I tried one that is a larger file size.

Will try again to uninstall, install, and reboot before plugging in. The USB port only worked when the unit was brand new and only for a short time. HP recommended LPT1 over any other connection.

Something must be fouled in the cables, which, I understand, are sometimes not compatible with wiring switches from one end to the other if two cable are joined instead of using one.

New (old) machine may have some different requirements than my previous one, which never had a problem with LPT1.

    Thanks.

    Tom
