Signed up w/AVG Forum and was assigned a password. Accessed forum and inputted designated text. Keep getting error message that user name/password is in error (which it's not). Also, can't get usual home page, although can get to and thru Windows BBS (here I am). Keep gettin error message that IE "has experienced a problem and must shut down ". Any suggestions?

Anytime Internet Explorer (assuming that's what you're using) starts acting squirrely, the first thing to suspect is spyware.

If you haven't already, download, install, immediately update and then run Spybot and/or Ad-Aware. Read the help files to familiarize yourself with how they work. I recommend you use them both since each tends to find things the other misses. Let them clean up any spyware found.

Thanks for your help. I used both apps, and frankly can't make heads or tails of the results. Neither procalaims finding any malware, but neither boasts very loudly about NOT. Is there a feature on either or both that explains any results, or advises you as what to do with them? Thanks again.

I forgot: I also use Firefox, but runinto same prob. Do you know any way I can contact AVG and ask for their help? Their contact info is scarce as hen's teeth.

You might get some help (on your original problem and regarding the problem logging on to the Grisoft forum) at this third-party AVG forum: http://computercops.biz/forum106.html

    Some very helpful people there.

I use FF 1.0 and have no problem going to the AVG Forum

Maybe you could simply register again? Go to the AVG Program and do it from the information drop down.

I remember having some problem when I first tried to register but following the Information drop down worked.

It's unusual for neither Spybot nor Ad-Aware to find nothing. However, their finding nothing on your computer, along with the problem you're having posting to a forum, indicates the problem may be you have your security set too high, especially in regards to cookies.

The AVG board may attempt to validate your username and password when you post. To do that it must access the cookie it sets on your computer when you log into that board. If your browsers, or any cookie-handing software you may have, are set to reject cookies, there's nothing to check so you get the "invalid username and password" error.

Try changing the cookie-handling options in either browser or in any third-party cookie managment software you may have to at least accept session cookies and see if that helps.

Parts of this really do sound like some sort of malware. Two things to try if you want

    - do an online virus scan just in case something has gotten in and disabled your onboard AV. Several good ones available if you just google for online virus scan

    - then get the current version of Hijackthis (see quicklinks in my signature) and generate a log then post the log contents here. HJT needs to be placed in a regular folder so not on or under desktop and not any sort of temp folder.
