my laptop, Compaq Presario 2500, for some reason does not have any installed sound driver. For a long time, i have not been able to get the internet to work (right when i installed SP2 for windows XP Home, a connection perhaps?) until I reinstalled all of the drivers from the system recovery disk from Compaq. After I ran the recovery disk, everything was working perfect, until I noticed that there was NO sound device. The reason I did not notice this right away was becuase anything that has some sort of sound volume editor, i.e. winamp, works just fine. I started up a game on the laptop to discover that there was no sound comeing out of the speakers. I figured that i might of accidently muted it, and went looking for the audio icon in the menu by the clock, as you can imagine, it was not there. I then proceded to go to the control panel and clicked on the sounds and audio devices icon. In the volume tab, where it normally says the driver/device, it sats: No Audio Device. Remember, this is a laptop with built in speakers.
The Sounds and audio devices hardware tab is as follows:
    SAMSUNG CDRW/DVD SN-324F
    Unimodem Half-Duplex Audio Device
    Conwxant AC-Link Audio
    Audio Codecs
    Legacy Audio Drivers
    Media Control Devices
    Legacy Video Capture Devices
    Video Codecs

    Thanks,
    Jason

Sounds like you should use ur recovery cd's to re-install the drivers. Compaw usually has drivers on their discs is what i seem to recall...

In case you have one of those compaq recovery cds that has the drivers and other files zipped in passworded archives, try the website. I have a link below to the driver section for the 2500 presario laptop, but there were many variations of the 2500. So if it isnt your model i have linked exactly, it will be on the same site elsewhere.

As an afterthought, can you tell me if you have anything with an ! next to it under Sound devices in Device manager. If you do thats just a missing driver, if you dont, your sound may not be enabled in BIOS. On Compaqs, the key to use to enter BIOS is F10, and sometimes F1 or F2.

the picture of my device manager is here
    [http://www.geocities.com/absentmindedjwc/drivers.JPG]

the one thing that is rather strange is that the recovery disk does not have any audio drivers on it... i ran the disk in order to fix my WLAN drivers... and it did something to the audio drivers.

i will run it again when i get home.

    Thanks,
    Jason

I ran the driver installation file and it accomplished absolutely nothing... the audio devices screen still says the same thing

    What do I do now?

After looking at your device manager screen dump, it appears that the audio device isnt present at all or disabled. Normally if you have a device and the driver is not quite right or missing, you will see a device listed in the section with a ! next to it.

So i would guess that either your audio has died completely, or it is disabled in BIOS. I mention the keys commonly used for BIOS on Compaqs in previous post. If this doesnt help or you cant get into BIOS, let me know.

it wasnt bios... it is fixed now... the only thing, i have no idea what i did. I just got into one of those moods; you know the kind, where you wont accept it not working, where you would go as far to take it apart to check all the connections... thankfully i did not get to that point... once i figure out what i did, i will respond back,
    thanks all for the help,
    Jason
