I have 2 applications where their menus do not work.

I installed XP-Home on my new PC a few months back and installed Norton-2003 (which came with my M/B CD). Norton's menus never worked, but NAV functions well in background. I have absolutely no control over it. I have tried several suggested fixes from Nortons (so-called) support site but nothing worked. Naturally I suspected Norton to be at fault because my symptoms were noted with fixes.

Everything else seemed to work normally.

A few weeks ago I loaded a proprietary internet application (via IE, it does not support Mozilla) that I must use with my new support job. It too would not work properly. It has 2 levels of menus, and some menus have function buttons. These secondary functions don't work. When I click a button, it just sits there. Zip happens. At the bottom of IE there is the telltale Java command that is ignored.

The app. providers techies spent over an hour with remote control on my PC checking stuff, IE, and the applications profile defaults and permits, to no avail. We came up with a work around, but that tested the patience of all concerned, until yesterday when I was forced off the support net. The ball was tossed into another parties court to fix, and they are not noted for responsiveness.

It occured to me this morning, that perhaps the 2 failures are related somehow, possibly through a misconfiguration with my Javascript. But that is terra-incognito to me.

    Any ideas anyone???

Try Internet Options\Security Tab\Restore Defaults button and Advanced Tab\Restore Defaults. If apps work, gthen reconfigure your internet settings until you discover which setting breaks the apps.

I believe Norton uses IE scripting engine for it's menus and if your IE security settings are altered, the scripting may break in the apps.

Also, XP Service Pack 2 causes some programs to break and the program manufacturers are resoponsible for fixing, which could take a while until all bugs are worked out.

    Did that, nada

That was one of the first things we did trying to fix app 2. Nada.

Even upgraded to Script 5.6 as recommended by Norton. Again, nada.

Uninstalled/reinstalled NAV-2003, now it won't complete the Liveupdates.

My App 2 is strictly an intranet app and has no files on my PC.

Also, I have not yet done SP2. I've heard of too many problems. I have the CD but after printing a 1/4 inch thick stack of install notes I got cold feet.

    Menu problems related?

If both menu systems employ java that may be the case. It might also be that they are both activated by "pop up" commands that are being prevented by SP2 if you are running XP or a pop up blocker application such as Ad aware or Yahoo tool bar. These things would be a lot more useful if they flagged themselves up as operating when they interfered/helped out.

    Mikekoi, you are a genius!!!!

Yes, popups were blocked in IE. When I allowed popups, my critical app works as it is supposed to. Now I can get back to work. Such a simple fix eluded some real bright lights at 2 system houses. (and I may not tell them how!)

Alas, not for my Norton-2003. It still remains stupid.

I believe the uninstall program for Norton has an option to Repair. Try that.

    No repair option

Mine is a lite version from my motherboard install CD. No repair function avaiable.

I'm getting a NAV-2004 CD soon, and will try that. At least there is some support for it.
