disconnection

    Hi there

    I am getting disconnected from my dialup internet connection after only a few minutes online most of the time - but oddly, sometimes I can stay on for much longer. I have checked the Event Log for System and nothing untoward appears. However, in the Application log there is this message:

    The description for Event ID ( 2 ) in Source ( LOGITECH ) cannot be found. The local computer may not have the necessary registry information or message DLL files to display messages from a remote computer. You may be able to use the /AUXSOURCE= flag to retrieve this description; see Help and Support for details. The following information is part of the event: .

    There is no further information. I have used a different modem to check that it isn't the modem at fault. Can anyone help? Thanks

    Hello MGB,

    LOGITECH refers to either KB or Mouse, probably wireless. To begin trouble shooting, can you switch out the mouse?

    The other direction to head is background software problems - most obvious is the firewall.

    Thanks for the reply. This is a laptop. The only Logitech product is the webcam, which is not connected, but does have software installed. I am totally ignorant about what that long error message meant tho - that's the problem.

    The error message may be a red herring.

    Phone line noise often causes this problem. To test for noise, dial a single digit (other than 0) and listen. Repeat several times and at different times of day. You should not hear any sound on the line at all. Any frying, static, or squealing sound, no matter how faint, will disrupt a modem. If you hear anything, call the phone company repair desk and they'll fix it for you at no charge. You may also have noticed this noise during normal telephone conversations.

    If you have had any rainstorms lately, that generally brings on a rash of these types of complaints. The root cause is carlessness on the part of the telephone servicemen about replacing the raintight cover on pedestal boards, etc.

    LOL, having the same problem right now, but I know the source: I can see the Phone truck from my window.

    To get a better handle on diagnosing the problem:

    This program:called UpTimer:

    Quote:
    A bar that sits at the top of your screen and can display over 20 pieces of system information that might be useful to you. System time, system date, uptime, free RAM, free pagefile, free disk space, CPU usage, IP address(es), Winamp controls, battery status, running programs, netstat, etc.


    You can pick what's displayed. One handy display is tcp monitoring, meaning real time download/upload in KB per second. If that KB rate fluctuates wildly, or is below 5.0 KBS, then I think surferdude is right, it's the phone line. Another symptom, the connection speed indicator in the tray area, is it lower than what you're used to?

    That event log message is simply the OS saying to you that it would be happy to generate a longer event with more specific information but is missing the logitech file it would need to find and display it.

    About all it tells you for sure is that the error is occuring somewhere besides on your PC but that your PC is somehow seeing it and possibly being affected by it.

    If you are on a network, check event logs on other PCs that happened at the same time.

    Hi there all those who answered. Thanks for your suggestions. I had already had the phone people check the line and they tell me it's very good. I get a connection speed of around 40kbs on all three computers in the house - none of the others have the disconnect problem. (remember this is dialup - no broadband available where I live - good old rural UK).
    I will try the Uptimer program - any idea where this is available?[@Charlesvar]
    Thanks too for the interpretation of the error message - like most MS messages it still doesn't mean a whole lot does it?
