    This one is annoying me!!

Subsequent to removal of spyware, IE6 SP1 refuses to display pages even though Outlook Express is happy to send and recieve email!

Have gone through all know and published fixes but still no joy!

The system is a Dell Optiplex GX100, Win2K SP4, ADSL modem - all pretty normal.

    Any ideas?!

Tekno--One of the "causes" in the article to which PeteC referred you is that your Winsock is damaged but the solutions might sound daunting. If the other suggestions do not work, you might consider the following "fix ".

    PeteC,

    Thank you for your welcome!

Yes I have already used the Microsoft "fixes" but no resolution!

The ispfix looks interesting, I had downloaded it already but not used it yet!

I will let you know what happens.

In the meantime I just don't understand how Outlook & Outlook Express are still working, usually it is all or nothing?!

    :) UPDATE!

Used Ispfix but no problems found with Winsock!

However when looking around the sytem found in the Internet Protocol
(TCP/IP) settings that the DNS options settings were greyed out and
couldn't be changed - just entered the addresses and back on line!!

Still wondering how Outlook kept on working though!

Now finally to work out how to get DNS address automatically - think
that it would be best to remove the Internet Protocol and re-install?!

Thanks guys for pointing me in the right direction! :)

    Tekno--
I can tell you how to do that in Win98 or WinXP, but no experience in Win2000.
    In Win98, Start|Run|type winipcfg|OK|highlight the connection of interest|click Release All|Renew All.
in WinXP, Control Panel|Internet Connections|right click the connection of interest|Repair.
Hope one of those works in Win2000. It is possible Win2000 uses the Win98 method, but you type ipconfig instead of winipcfg in the Run line.

    Thanks Jim for your suggestions!

For your information Windows 2k shares its background with XP both based on NT technology! I still find Win98SE the most easily configurable and repairable!!!

Back to the problem . . . . no matter what repair I try the DNS options remain "greyed out" but as I previously mentioned was able to enter the addresses manually.

I would still like to fix it and enable automatic allocation - at least it is still operational though!!

    From a cmd prompt
    Code:
    Netsh int ip reset C:\iplog.txt
That will reset your network pieces to their defaults and you'll have to configure again but it should fix you up.

    :)

    Newt,

Tried your advice and went over some of the other points, however the option is still greyed out. Anyway the DNS settings are entered and working so will call it a day - for now!

    Many thanks to all!
