Hope someone out there can help - I've tried the microsoft Win 98 support pages and the previous posts here but nothing I can see seems to address my problem.

My OS is Win 98 Second Edition, all critical updates etc. loaded, AMD Duron 800 processor, 320 MB RAM.

Every time I start my computer, open a desk top folder or start control panel I get the following error message:

Explorer - This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down. If the problem persists contact the program vendor.

Clicking on details gives the details as below:

EXPLORER caused an invalid page fault in
    module KERNEL32.DLL at 0167:bff8ac13.

Clicking on close, closes the error message and then generates the same error message again.

Clicking on details for this second error message gives the details below:

EXPLORER caused an invalid page fault in
    module KERNEL32.DLL at 0167:bff8ac13.
    Registers:
    EAX=00000000 CS=0167 EIP=bff8ac13 EFLGS=00000246

Clicking on close this time closes the error message and causes the explorer window to open and work normally.

System had been working normally until last night when I was trying out some trial versions of audio CD burning software. All have since been uninstalled but there was an illegal operation message generated during one of the uninstalls (can't remember which one).

Thanks in advance, if this has already been addressed and I've missed it then apologies in advance, any breaches of netiquette apolgies in advance but I'm new to the world of forums.

Go to Add Remove Programs and click to uninstall IE. You should be given the choice to Repair it. Do so.

Many thanks for the suggestion TonyT.

I tried it but no joy, after repairing IE the same error messages are still happening.

If this JUST started, try a registry restore.

Shutdown > Restart > MSDOS mode
    At the prompt,
    SCANREG/Restore

There will be 5 listed, choose the date when you did the installs. This will be the backup taken on your first boot that day.

I believe the explorer error in question here is Windows Explorer not Internet Explorer.

    The couple of times I had it I had to do a re-install ( reapir ) of 98 and/or 98SE.

And I had not installed anything new.

The final fix was to patch a Microsoft Game. ( Links Golf )
