anytime i type the name of a system tool in the run command, explorer crashes.

ex: msconfig, taskman, cmd, calc, notepad, ect...

however If i type c:\windows\notepad.exe, or c:\windows\system32\cmd.exe, they apps will launch fine.

also, If I double click on the volumn icon in the systray, same thing happens. However I can launch all other systray apps by dbl click.

internet explorer crashes when it is launched (I can't remember how to disable the user friendly windows error messages). I'm using firefox now which works fine.

there are no suspicious processes and no virus was found by adaware or norton.

Rule of thumb = Always try System Restore and run SFC / SCANNOW since that will be the first thing any person trying to assist will ask. Have you done those two things? (see, I told you they would ask) :) )

In some ways, your problem sounds related to your PATH statement. Check that by running a command window and typing PATH (press enter) and report back what it says. I don't really believe that an inadequate PATH statement would give the exact symptoms you have though.

Do those three items and report back so we have more clues.

What's the name of the dll that gave you trouble? It may be helpful in the future for somebody with the same problem. ;)
