A problem has developed on my 2nd PC (Thank god I have another one!), it started yesterday with the odd blinking off of the screen from time to time. This AM it goes into the WinXP loading routine ( the side scrolling indicator) which stops halfway? through. I during loading to safe mode it gets as far as AGP400.SYS, hangs for a bit and then enters safe mode. This works very slowly and progs. often hang. I suspect that it's a hard disk problem, although it ran the disk checking routine on a plae blue screen which said all is OK, so is there any fix I can do to recover until I can get it changed, or am I barking up the wrong tree and is it a graphics driver or virus problem?
    TIA for your help.

    agp 440

I think it is 440. Tried your suggestions with a couple of problems. Put XP CD in drive and first of 6 set up floppys in floppy drive and started PC with f12 pressed - got a 'stuck key' message. Tried again, pressing f12 after the mem check and it had no effect at all - XP carried on loading and stuck again after seek floppy and seek CD.
Not quite clear as to what the Microsoft Recovery Console is either. I can get into a limited 'Safe' Mode, slow and not all progs work). any chance of disabling 440 from there?

Do you mean change BIOS to boot from CD rom and then use the XP CD as a boot disk?

OK, I haven't checked, but I never heard of pressing F12 (step 2 from the MSKB).

Set your BIOS so that you can boot from your CD-ROM, that way you don't need to 'muck' around with setup floppies...

Step 4: After Windows Setup starts (when booting from the CD), it will stop on a screen which lists:

    • The set up Windows XP now, press ENTER
    • To repair a Windows XP installation using Recovery Console, press R
    • To quit Setup without installing Windows XP, press F3

    You'll need the 2nd option.

Let me know if you have problems following the instructions.
