laptop won't stay on

    When I boot up my laptop it opens Windows and after about 30 seconds shuts off abruptly. :confused:

    Compaq Presario
    Windows ME
    256 MB RAM

    When powered through battery or mains power?

    Does it completely loose power?

    Any warning messages?

    Have you checked the battery. A faulty battery can affect power continuity even if powered from mains power. Maybe try cleaning the battery contacts on the batt. and laptop. The battery may need to be deep cycled if it has a memory effect. The battery may be just plain worn out.
