"ntldr" is missing after new hard drive installed

    Installed new hard drive old one was corrupt, I formated using a maxtor program, inserted xp disk and rebotted and keep getting "ntldr" is missing message? it is set to boot cd rom first. Hard drive is 80 GB Maxtor 7200rpm t/m ultra ata/133 8mb cache. Can anyone help i tried microsofts solution but will not work? What am i doing wrong? I followed instruction and ran cd provided.
