    I attempted to install an old version of Quicken. It was not acceptable; I got an error message citing too few "files" and "buffers ". How do I increase f&b in windows xp? Any help would be appreciated.

    Hello Chuck,

    How do I increase f&b in windows xp?

    AFAIK can't outside of the program.

    You can try running Quicken in compatibility mode. This feature was designed to run old software - form 95 and older era on NT systems.

    Right click on the exe. > properties > compatibility tab.

    For a full explanation: use the Help & Support applet on the start menu. Search for compatibility.

    Regards - Charles

    you can include files= and buffers= in \windows\system32\config.nt

    but compatibility mode might be the ticket.

    Thanks to both. I'll try the compatibility mode, but not sure how to activate it before installing.

    Hi Chuck,

    Did you get the message trying to install or when you run the program? Compatibility option is for programs installed.

    Try editing config.nt then and add these two lines at the bottom

    FILES=120
    BUFFERS=24

    If still no luck you can increase either or both values but those should do the job for you.
