I'd like to run Trendmicro's "Housecall" (free online anti-virus scanner) using Netscape 7.2, but when I try to, it goes to a webpage that says I am missing some components to run Housecall, and it directs me to click on a link that will download a program to install the missing components.

I did that, and when I run that program, first it tells me that it can't find where Netscape is installed. It gives me the opportunity to "browse" for where it is. I do that (it's in Program Files\Netscape\Netscape), and it becomes satisfied. Next, though, it says it can't find where Netscapse's Plug-Ins are located. Again, I am given the opportunity to "browse" for the location. There is a folder under Program Files\Netscape\Netscape called "Plugins ", and it has lots of files in it. You'd think it would be that, but the program keeps saying that it can't find Netscape's Plugins folder.

I tried specifying Program Files\Netscape\Netscape (thinking that it wanted to "find" the Plugins folder. That was no good, so I tried specifying Program Files\Netscape\Netscape\Plugins. Still no go.

Perhaps I should mention that this "program" I downloaded (the one that is supposed to install the components I am missing for Housecall) got put in Program Files\Common Files\Mozilla.org\Gre\1.7.2_2004080415. Not knowing a better place to put it, I let it go there.

Anyone have an idea as to what might be wrong? (I couldn't find any support category at Trend Micro that seemed appropriate to this issue) :(

    Thank you.

    rlambert7 ...

    From Trend Micro's FAQs:
Trend Micro HouseCall...uses Microsoft Internet Explorer to push ActiveX controls to the client to perform virus scanning. Currently, Netscape doesn't support ActiveX controls.
I can't run it using Firefox, either.

I just tried it, and this is what I discovered...
For some reason "Housecall" setup is looking for Netscape 4.7 directory. I still have it on my machine, so when I directed "Housecall" setup to C:\Program Files\Netscape\Communicator, it installed without a blink....

Netscape7.2 has the npmozax.dll plugin should have been able to do do the job for Active X controls. I have seen an almost unnatural fear of this file. However, if Trend Micro wants to work only with the old Netscapes there is not much that one can do. If I am told that Trend Micro cannot find the plugins folder in 7.2, although I even entered the path including the plugins folder, it seems to me that Trend Micro wants to do things only one way. I may try an end-around but I am not so hopeful.

I tried the end-arounds and, failed miserably.
I ended up installing in NS4.8. Maybe there is some other file, but all I saw was NPJScan.dll in the plugins folder of 4.8. I copied that file in the 7.2 plugins folder, but TrendMicro chose to not see it. Firefox1.0, though did react as if it was going to do something, but after 5 min. I gave up.
I tried 4.8, and TrendMicro seemed to download some 10MB of something, and then...nothing.
Of course, I would like a comment from someone, but why would any one bother with such thing is beyond me. I can get the McAfee Stinger which is free and thorogh, and does not require any undescribed manipulation.
And, although it is Active X-activated, it is Java-driven, but who knows what they want?

If you really want to run Housecall, why not just do it with the IE that's also on your computer? ;) :D

Thanks for the all the info and comments.

Why don't I run Housecall using IE? Well, I've got 3 computers. I am able to run Housecall on 2 of them using IE, but IE is "broken" to some degree (I frequently get "Done, but with errors on page" in the status bar, among other things) on the 3rd PC, and I haven't been able to fix it. I thought I'd try installing Netscape.

I had not heard of McAffe Stinger, but will check it out.

    Thanks again.

Or, download and install the free version of AVG. The new version has lots of features that the old one didn't, including inbound/outbound email scanning for Netscape/Mozilla/Thunderbird.

I have AVG installed, but Trendmicro or Pandasoftware have a "on the fly" scanner. I never realized that they were such a pain, but had no need to use them. I am using McAfee Stinger which is a small self-standing utility. It has only the definitions of the most recent and prevalent viruses. And, does not require any manipulation.
I was told that the npmozax.dll file is good only for windows media files, but I have my doubts about it. I was also told that the activex.js file should be edited for NS or Mozilla to work. I have the file in NS7.1, 7.2 and Mozilla1.7.3, and in case I could not open it on account of a Javascript error. "Object expected code 800A138F line 1 Microsoft Js Runtime error.
So, the programs are Javascript, not Java-driven.
