    Hello,

My OS is Windows 98 First Edition.

I'd like to run a DOS program from a CD-RW disc in my CD burner which is drive F. [When I run DOS for the particular DOS program in mind, Windows has to be and will be completely shut down.] [And I don't want to burn the frequently updated DOS program onto a CD-R disc. My other CD drive -- the E drive -- will only read CD-R discs, not CD-RW discs. This is why I have to use the F:\ (CD burner) drive reading the DOS program burned into a CD-RW disc.]

I tried to run the DOS program from a CD-RW disc but my computer system will not recognize the F:\ (CD burner) drive. What do I have to edit (in Sysedit?? or where?), and what do I enter, in order for DOS to recognize the F drive and to run the DOS program from that F drive?
Also, what sort of DOS CD-hardware-running program has to be where - in what line of say Autoexec.bat (or whatever) - in order for the CD-RW to be read, etc. ?

[Again, my OS is Windows 98 First Edition.]

    Thanks,

    Stan

    Hi StanP,

To run the program in question
so suggest you copy the progtam to your hard drive (into a folder of it's own) and then reboot to DOS (shutdown>restart in ms-dos) and CD to the folder and run the program.

You can also try to make a DOS boot disk (control panel> boot disk tab) and chose cd support from the boot menu. The CDs should be visible; watch the messages carefully for drive letters.

The DOS program I want to run from a disc is F-prot, an anti-virus program updated often.
I want to run it from a disc because if there's some great virus infection emergency (an infection that affects Windows *and* DOS on the hard drive), one must run F-prot from a disc, not run it from the hard drive. [Since one of the F-prot files was made, earlier this year, larger than the capacity of a 3.5" disc, one has to run F-prot now from a CD-RW.]

I looked in my Control Panel. There is no "boot disk tab ". Where did you find this? Is it in Windows *after* Windows 98? [Also, I don't have IE on my computer. Because I favor Netscape, I stripped all of IE from my computer back in 1999. I used the freeware "98Lite" to do this. Now I only use Firefox as my browser.

I'd still like to know how to get my computer, running in DOS only, to read a CD-RW from the F drive. [Presently my computer doesn't even recognize the F drive.]

Hi, Boot from a standard Win98 floppy and choose to boot with CD rom
support (you may need a UDF driver to see the CD RW).
The drive letter of the CD drive may not be the same as you see in Windows.
    At the A: prompt type
    X:\ppppp.bat
where X is the assigned CD ROM drive letter and ppppp is the program you
    want to run.
    regards
