Personally, I back my address book up as Other > Text (CSV-comma separated values). This allows me to read the actual entries.

    Hi PeteC,

Now that this post is a "done deed" and concluded, I feel I can safely zip in here and add a comment that will not cloud, confuse or clutter up the post.

By any "outloud thinking" I was doing, I didn't mean to give you or anyone the following impression:
I was not hiding the statement or conclusion, "that a cd-rw may not mark a file with the "read only ", by posing a question meant to make, prode or torture the poster. I just plain didn't know or wasn't a 100% sure. While logic or common sense lead me to believe that this was a possibility, I wasn't going to say it was so based on my quesstimate.

I guess I could have dragged a cdrw out and checked it myself but procrastinated doing so because this seemed like a Cut And Dry misunderstanding of the ability to open a "read only wab" off of a cdrom. That coupled with the user not understanding that cdrom-r (anyway) will always mark files with this attribute. Some files will open with no problem marked as such while others will not. The monkey wrench of past behavior and abilities of cd-rw's didn't help Brownie any either.

I just wanted to clear this up as I myself sometimes come across posts (not an this board) where a respondent will not answer a question directly but seems to take pleasure at torturing or poking fun at another by offering clues, hints, or thought to be clever (although, admittedly some are quite clever if you like puzzle solving) metaphors, limericks, or questions answered by questions.. etc. This is not my style nor my desire.

Phewww!!! I feel a little better....it just nibbled away at me that you or anyone would think that I would do that.

    Hi Ann

Quit worrying :) You posted an honest comment, posing a question which, IMO, was not misleading, and gave the impression that you were not sure on this. That's fair comment - none of us are expert at everything - a lot of the time we are groping in the dark (myself included :D) hoping to find a solution for the poster.

Thanks for your openness on this, appreciated :)

    Thanks Pete,
That's what I thought I was doing until you made this comment,

That kind of threw me off. No big deal now. It may have been your choice of words or my take on what you (and possibly others) were thinking, I was doing. No need to respond and make this post a never ending journal. Maybe I'm just tired. Thanksgiving Holiday is no Holiday when your the GrandMA in charge of cooking, family gathering and all that goes with it. It was pleasure but I may need a holiday to get over the holiday...... :)

    Brownie--
Glad I could be of some help.
You can find this type of information for most file types. Go to Windows Explorer|Tools|Folder Options|File Types tab|scroll to the file type of interest|highlight it|click Advanced. That will give you the window on the left of my thumbnail. In the "Action" box you may see one or more actions. "Open" is usually the one of interest. Make sure that is either alone or highlighted. Click Edit. Now you will see the window on the right of my thumbnail. And you can see what command Windows issues to perform the action ( "Open" in this case) and what .exe file is involved.
Click Cancel|Cancel to get out of these boxes, unless you want to make changes.
You can see that there are several things you can do from this window, like change icon, and change the "Confirm Open after download" setting. I do not suggest you uncheck that box, but you should know what function those cryptic words refer to. When you download a file from the Internet by clicking on a link (or using IE File|Save As), you normally get a window that gives you the option to Run or Save the file, and to decide where to Save the file if you choose that option. Unchecking the "Confirm Open after download" box mieans you will not get the window after clicking File|Save As. Most people panic when that happens, since they cannot find where the downloaded file has gone. :)
