    Hi,

I have reached the point where I wish to reinstall my OS though I don't wish to merely reinstall over what is currently in place. I have a DELL 4600 CPU2.40 512Mem, etc. I know that I can go through the reinstall using the Reinstallation CD with XPSP1a (I guess formerly known as the Restore or Recovery CD) but can this CD be used to "reformat" and do a 'CLean Install'. I'm guessing it 'can't' be done but I just want to know for sure. I've read some other similar threads on here and came away still uncertain. Is there a YEA or NAY on this? Thanks!

If it's the Restore CD that came with your computer, that's exactly what it does - formats and reinstalls everything to the condition it was when you first got it.

    Hello Cbuck,
    welcome to the Windows BBS ...... :) ...... !

    Not much experince with OEM computers and their restore CD's. Done it once on a Fujitsu Siemens and there were two options;

    - to repair the current installation and leave all user data untouched,

    - to do a clean install with a format.

I would think that inserting the CD and let it start from within Windows will give the repair option only but inserting the CD and restarting the computer to boot from the CD will give both options.

Try it ...... ...... if You don't get what You want You can always abort!

    Hello Cbuck,

Dell's CD is just the OS - the software they put on has to be installed on top of that.

So yes, you can treat this as a retail XP copy at whatever stage you got it - meaning with or without service packs.

    Regards - Charles

Thanks Surfer and Christer. It doeth appear that I have my answer now. I knew that it would reinstall but what I wasn't sure of, whether it wiped the HDD clean and began anew. OK...I will go into BIOS, set the CDROM as first read, and do the bootup. I had posted this a few times in other forums but never got a good answer. So thanks again and I'm glad to be here. :)

Thanks Charles...Yep I understand that and have all the CDs. In this same vein, can an OEM XPCD be slipstreamed with SP2? Thanks!

Chuck, this one can. HP's/Compaq's couldn't be for example. The "restore" disc contains more than the OS - it's the "factory settings ", meaning that all the OEM installed apps are on that disc as well.

Lot's of problems with Dell, but in this instance they do it right.

    Regards - Charles

Do a search in the Windows XP forum for slipstream OEM and have a read. It seems to work in some cases but not in other cases.

For all intensive purposes, the first disk of your Restore pack is a Windows XP that is encoded to load in a Dell. Dell has its own set of keys. It can be slipstreamed, but I think I read somewhere that a few files have to be adjusted in the process because of the Dell encoding. Do a search for Dell Slipsteam.
