    Hi,

I have installed an epson 440 printer to my system, it prints fine but it will not read the ink levels in the utility and in status it cannot find the printer or does not show printer as ready to print. Epson monitor 2 cannot find the printer either. The printer is set as the default printer, I have tried another cable and reinstalling the drivers. In device management everything is ok as well. The BIOS for the parallel port are set at ECP.
    Can anyone help please?

You know it has been so long since used it. I just installed it again. Epson Stylus COLOR 440 ESC/P 2 is what it uses. I can't find anything with the printer levels. The utilities are the same as without the monitor. Now I know why I don't use it. Back when I used it on Windows 98 I remember seeing that on the system tray when I was printing. Sorry maybe someone else will see this and explain more.

My monitor always says searching but if I doubleclick it it shows the printer. When I printed another monitor icon showed up next to the startup monitor one. Mine is set for default also. I have two printers and have to set the default or it prints jibberish. I have to switch the parallel cables because I only have one port.

From your description it sounds to be only software (Epson utility) related. Try removing the Epson program (should be Add/remove programs). Delete the printer in the Printers folder. Disconnect the printer. Shutdown.
When you restart, install the Epson program first, reboot if it asks you to.
When you have the utility program installed, if it does not automatically install the printer, go to the Printers folder and run the Add (New) Printer wizard. After that I might suspect a Windows problem (eg. I have had to update/reinstall the "Windows Installer" program, because it had gotten corrupted. Only some programs were being installed correctly).
