When I double click on my Recycle Bin I get the message "Windows cannot fin program.exe ", I think this is because I recently unistalled Norton SystemWorks 2002 - however, when I try to install new Anti-Virus software, my computer either freezes or just plain crashes.
I have run virus scans and nothing has been detected.

What do I do to fix this?

(Also, at one point whenever I opened a folder, it would appear to be empty, but it looks like that has been fixed)

If the First reply doesnt work i have seen this error caused by virus infections as well, so you can go to Symantec and do a free online scan here:

    http://security.symantec.com/ssc/home.asp?j=1&langid=us&venid=sym&plfid=23&pkj=XIMLPSIYTIWIUOHZFKZ

Or download the free standalone (doesn't need installing) McAfee virus scanner called Stinger here

    http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/

A variety of viruses, if existing on your PC, will not allow you to install Norotns Antivirus or any common AV program, and may block access to some antivirus maker's websites. If you have this problem let us know, i may be able to post a copy of the Stinger program on another site for you to access.

    Thanks to you both -
For Pete: unfortunately those two pages were things I came across early on in trying to figure out what was going on. My problem is with the missing program.exe is with my Recycle bin only.

For Dez: I've already tried Symantec's scan, I also scanned with F-Prot and neither found anything. I'll try Stinger as well just in case.

Thanks! That solved the .exe problem.
One of the virus scans did find a worm called W32/sillydropper. Supposedly it's been removed.
