My machine is running Windows XP with all of the patches installed. Two people use it. When logging off one to go to the other (or vice-versa) the 'end program now' dialoque window keeps popping up. So they are not logging off cleanly. Any suggestions?

    jamest1945 - Welcome to the Board :)
Which program is referenced in the 'End Program Now' dialogue box?

Does this also occur when you shut down?

Hi Petec, thank you for your prompt reply. Yes it also appears when I shut down. The box just says that your files/documents may not save properly if the application etc is not saved. I presumed this was just generic because we always save files etc., prior to switching users or shutting down.

If you are using 'Fast User Switching' try turning the option off .....

Control Panel > User Accounts > Change the way ....

    Sorry PeteC

I should have been more explicit in stating what I have done. I did do what you suggested. Nothing changed.

Take a look in Event Viewer and see if there are any error messages relating to programs misbehaving on shutdown.

Right click My Computer > Manage > Event Viewer > System and Application.

Post any relevant messages here ....

Double click on error message to open, click on icon below the up/down arrows to copy to clip board and paste in a post here.

Hi Pete, well now I know much more about my system. I never new that the utilities you directed me to use were available. Of course I really do not have a need, usually, to use this.

I went through the event log and it was relatively easy to discern the issue I am talking about. I believe this is it:

    Event Type: Information
    Event Source: Application Popup
    Event Category: None
    Event ID: 26
    Date: 03/11/2004
    Time: 12:29:56 AM
    User: N/A
    Computer: THOMSON
    Description:
Application popup: devldr32.exe - DLL Initialization Failed : The application failed to initialize because the window station is shutting down.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

According to a Google search devldr32.exe is a Creative Soundblaster file, but there is also mention of exactly the same file masquerading as a virus.

I suggest two actions, in this order ....

Run an online virus scan such as RAV

    If nothing is detected ....

If you have Soundblaster software installed remove it through Add/Remove Programs, remove the sound card throuh Device Manager, reboot and reinstall the software. Windows should see the card on reboot.
