this is the first machine that i have worked on that has a serial ata drive. so my question how can i attached this to something so i can copy data files to a different machine ???

my machines are not serial ata. what i normally do is remove the drive from problem machine and make a slave on one of my other machines then copy the data i want to my machine. drive i am working on now has no functionalily within windows. no icons, no start button, nothing to access and commands within windows. tried running a cd within windows and have it come up with the cd wizard so i can access my utils but its not even doing that. is an xp machine.

    any thoughts ???

no the machines i have are normal ide drives so i need something that i can take these new serial drives and attach to my ide somehow. this is not a problem as long as i can get into the machine and use my usb drive to move data to but if the drive is not accessible then i put the drive and attach to one of my other ide machines as a slave and copy the data to.

    Hi gg,
ssmith10pn is correct. Just add the pci card to your machine and you can temporarily add the SATA drive with its cable. See this for a better description.

This would also work but is more expensive.

You should bill the client for the expense of the card, too.

You can also buy a little converter that permits running a SATA HDD from an IDE cable. I have a couple of them but have never used them, can't remember if they came in WD Raptor retail packages or bundled with MoBo's. If I get a metabolic memory flash, I'll let you know.

    ;)

    Hi Rockster2U,

I got one with my latest mobo. But that's an expensive way to get one! :D

so somewhere out there there must be a cable with a serial connection on one end and an ide on the other. next time in the cities i will check at compusa. if anyone would have them they most likely would.

That could be an expensive habit - its like paying their price of $15-$20 for an audio cable that can be had for 15 cents elsewhere.

Just did some checking for you and I believe most converters let you run a parallel ATA device (40 pin) from a SATA connector, not the other way around. So, you may be SOL - I'll look around for the ones I have and try to get back to you. Then again, maybe Sparrow can check his out and let us both know.

    ;)

finally got around to looking at the 2 links in sparrows post and price wise it looks like the arco is a cheaper way to go but on the other side i have heard of promise before and know their rep is good.

the one from arco how does it install ??? do you just plug the 40 pin side into the 2nd ribbon connector of the ide ???

guess i'm not sure how i would then plug in the sata drive into my ide system to backup the data from the sata drive.

Save your money. PM me with an address, its Christmas time - Santa has just what you need and you're in luck because he doesn't need it.

    ;)

Edit - sorry for the false hope - wrong way converter. Serillel from ABIT, but its for running a parallel ATA drive from a SATA header, not the other way around.

folks i've been searching the web most of the day trying to find the adapter that would plug into the ide ribbon and the other end would be for the sata connector for the drive i am trying to copy. having a hard time finding such a ribbon but it must be out there.

i have looked at the promise card and am i correct to say that once the pci card is in place all you have to do is plug in the sata drive and the system will see the drive as a normal drive ???

personally i think the ribbon idea would be easier then theres nothing that might require installation.

any thoughts. hate to keep bothering you all on this but this site has the most knowledgable people i've chatted with.

pretty close to the other link you all furnished for the promise card. but this one just uses the current ide ribbon which to me seems a little more direct than the promise card. agree disagree ???

and i once again thank you. how did you find it ??? i searched and searched and could find anything like this.

The advantage to this as I see it is its mobility requiring no permanent installation or a dedicated bench machine. Pretty darn pricey though for what it is. I also like the jumper and the P&P aspect of this device. Found it using Dogpile in all of about 45 seconds - none of my old familiar standby sites for this type of device had anything close.

i have never heard of dogpile.com i just went to the site and maybe i will try searching through there for awhile.

yes, i do like the portability of this device also. still about the same price as what the promise card is. guess i need these things with most big computer vendors like dell going to sata drives. at least now when they start having problems i will be able to save their data easily. sometimes hocking up my usb xternal drive doesnt work when xp or other ops are corrupted big time.

    thanks again.
