    hi,
mozilla 1.6 on a win95B pc for browsing.
initially imported all my nn (4.77) bookmarks and the following occured:
i will click bookmarks about 8 times and nothing occurs HOWEVER then the button (icon) <sorry> clicks itself (gets pushed in by itself)
    eventually the file opens.
during this interval, nothing else is accessible (not a total freeze but it won't do anything)
i removed all the bookmarks and started from scratch
HOWEVER, by the time i accumulate <how many> this starts again.
i want to keep my bookmarks but perhaps somewhere else. (iow i could move them and choose) but this is sort of inconvenient.
is there a solution for this?
(i couldn't find anything searching this forum)
    thanks

    tanya,

You can make your Bookmarks the Home Page for your browser, and if you wish to move the Bookmarks from the browser, you can also do that. Create a new folder on your root directory, name it and move the bookmarks.html file to this folder. You can name it, e.g., C:\Bookmarks
Do this with Netscape and Quick Launch closed.

    Next:
    Go to your Preferences
    Edit | Preferences | Navigator
    In the Navigator Startup
Enable the radio button next to: Home Page
In the "Home Page" blank field, type in the location of the bookmarks.html file (C:\Bookmarks) or whatever you named your folder.

    tanya,
since you mentioned Mozilla1.6, just replace Netscape with mozilla1.6.
Also, it depends on how you imported the bookmarks from 4.77, since they are different format, .htm in 4.77 and .html in Mozilla.
Also, as long as the bookmarks are in the correct format and in the correct place, there is only one button to be concerned about, i.e. the Bookmarks button on the top Toolbar. Anything else is redundant, but will remind you of the 4.77 set up, but is unnecessary in Mozilla.

    hi Ramona,
    thank you for answering
this works without a problem however my usual home-page is google --
is there any way to access these (in the html link format) while using google still as the home page (of course i could always have the topMost bookmark for google)?
    thank you very much
    and Happy Thanksgiving!
    sincerely
    Tanya

    hi Westside
    thanks for replying
i was not very clear -- what i had been trying to point out was that i had A LOT of bookmarks in 4.77 and when i installed mozilla i imported all of them to mozilla (and now ufortunately i cannot recall whether i did so also from i.e. b/c i cannot even recall where i put them)
    lol
the point: when i accumulate i guess more than 10 bookmarks, the bookmarks button (and on the navigator toolBar stop responding.)
this seems to vary with the number oif bookmarks associated with the bookmarks button.

why would .htm and .html matter?
(this problem does NOT occur with the windows 98se pc)
    thanks again
    and Happy Thanksgiving!
    sincerely
    Tanya

    Hi Tanya,

It's been awhile since I've dealt with either Mozilla or Netscape, as I'm a long-time Firefox user, but they're all built on the same code, so here goes.

Firefox stores its bookmarks in the bookmarks.html file in the Firefox program folder. A bookmarks.bak file is created as soon as a new bookmark is added, or if the bookmarks are edited. If I were to delete the .bak file and rename the .html file to bookmarks.htm Firefox would be unable to read it and would create a new, empty bookmarks.html file, as well as a new bookmarks.bak file. Deleting the two new files and renaming the original bookmarks file back to bookmarks.html would restore the bookmarks to normal.

If you can't find your bookmarks file, do a search for bookmarks* (I suggest using the freeware program Agent Ransack, rather than the Windows search utility) and, if it's in other than the Mozilla program folder, move it there.

IE's Favorites are easily exportable to wherever you want. I noticed, though, that the requester names the file, by default, bookmarks.htm, so you'd have to change it (you can add the "l" in the requester window). If your IE favorites and Mozilla bookmarks are substantially different, I'm not sure how you'd go about integrating them, other than manually. Perhaps Ramona or Westside will have some ideas.

I hope this helps, and you have a nice Thanksgiving, too.

    hello JSS3rd (Jim)
    thank you for the reply!

    i'd forgotten about that
i have all of my bookmarks but mozilla appears to have to look for them for a
    LONG TIME

i have to apologize since i was very unclear in my original post:
i mentioned having imported bookmarks initially to imply that there were A LOT of bookmarks. Mozilla could find them but only after a long delay (manifested by the bookmark icon clicking itself (after i'd given up) and also the toolbar bookmark behaving the same way). Eventually the bookmarks would appear.
the same occurred when trying to bookmark a Web site
However i thought that there may be a corrupt bookmark or something so i removed all of the bookmark file from mozilla and started from scratch.
initially this was effective and mozilla would quickly open the bookmarks
however, after having accumulated a certain number mozilla would not be able to find them (i suppose that was what the delay was) and the icon would end up being pushed (as if i was clicking it) and same with the toolbar bookmark (and these bookmarks were all created in mozilla).
basically seems there is a problem after having accumulated a certain number of bookmarks!

thank you and likewise -- have a happy Thanksgiving
    sincerely
    Tanya

    Tanya,
as an additional clarification, Netscape4.x's bookmark file is "bookmark.htm" while all the later gecko based programs use: "bookmarks.html ". You will see that the 4.x file is singlular, and the later ones, plural.
I actually have copy/pasted a bookmark.htm file to my Netscape/Mozilla profile folder, and it is not read by the later programms, but if you right click|rename you will have a bookmarks.html file which will ask to replace the existing one.
I have many Netscape and Mozilla programs installed, each with its own profile. The profile make up and content vary to some extent, but I average over 300 bookmarks in each. I use anywhere from 3 to 15 bookmarks as Tabs, so all this open when I open the program. I have also 13 bookmarks folders (my Netscape folder has 32 individual bookmarks), and 16 individual bookmarks in my personal toolbar folder. I don't know why you would have all these problem.
The size of my bookmarks.html file is 49Kb. How big is yours?
I did some thinning of my bookmarks, discarding a number of IE folder which were imported automatically, and I continue this thinning.

    hello Westside
thank you again for the reply!

i was REALLY unclear in the original post ...
what i meant to say is that with a certain (increasing) number of bookmarks, mozilla 1.6 is EXTREMELY slow to *find* them (regardless of whether i had imported them or had created them in mozilla from scratch.)

    i don't know... i have mozilla 1.6 on a win 98 se pc and it is fine;

what Ramona suggested (having bookmarks.html as a start (home) page loads all of them (bookmarks) QUICKLY.)
mine is 93.1 kbs (.html) (and nn 4.77 has 113 kbs (.htm))

(i tried removing some bookmarks (mozilla) from the bookmarks that i created w/ mozilla (but no effect)

i searched the bugZilla site for similar *bugs* but found nothing

currently i have the mozilla bookmarks are in c:\bookmark\bookmark.html --
is there any way to direct the browser to this location (instead of having this location c:\bookmark\bookmark.html as a start up page i'd like to direct the browser to this location when i click the bookmark icon (or bookmark on the toolbar))
    ?

    Westside ...

I love this "I'll show you mine if you'll show me yours "! My bookmarks.html file is presently 114KB.

    Tanya ...

Firefox's bookmarks file is in the user's profile folder. Why don't you move it there and see if it loads any faster.

Not sure how it is in Mozilla, but the Bookmarks menu may have "Manage Bookmarks" (the bookmarks editor) as the second item (as in Firefox) ... you move bookmarks around, place them in folders, and remove them there.

    hi,
    thanks for answering!

not 100 % certain what you mean.
this is where mozilla keeps bookmarks.html:
    windows\mozilla\profiles\tanya\lcrxc8rv.slt

i moved them back and mozilla could not locate them (the usual delay) for a significant length of time
is there any way to edit prefs.js in mozilla so that the bookmarks are in another folder since when i did what Ramona suggested (made a new folder in C:\bookmarks) and edited view -> preferences to have mozilla open (home page) displaying all of the bookmarks (with no waiting period) opening mozilla caused NO DELAY (i assume this indicates that they are in the correct format)
i would like to put the bookmarks back into the c:\bookmarks folder and direct mozilla to this folder when i hit the bookmark icon (or the toolbar)
Mozilla has 4 options (1 greyed out) the 4th (or accessible 3rd) is manage bookmarks (ctrl + B)
i wonder whether it is this pc.
i thank you again for replying
p.s. if i put the bookmark.html file under "tanya" mozilla will not be able to locate them -- ever.

This link from Ramona should do the job, if you want to have the bookmarks file in a location other than default. I mention the size of the file for one reason only. Once, my file was bestowed a number of bookmarks by a website, and ended up with nearly 100 MB. That size would take long time to load. Obviouly the size of the file is not the problem. Read the above page. From what I gather you cannot move the file back and forth without some Prefs manipulation. That is disussed in Ramona's page.

    hi Westside
    thanks for the info...

it *should* however it will not be saved (and it is NOT read-only)
i really think that it could be the pc...

i couldn't proceed the first way (with 'about:config') b/c right-clicking in mozilla did not give the "new" option.

    i thank you very much
and again hope you had / have a great Thanksgiving
    sincerely
    Tanya
p.s. i may have some luck

    Tanya,
I don't know, but, I, personally, am not so patient, and create new profiles as soon as I see something stubborn. There are cases when one can't win without some extra effort. If you your bookmarks file works in the new profile, after copy.paste from the other location, do it that way.

    Tanya.

The Solutions page that Westside directed you to should have worked, as you said. I wonder if you had Mozilla and Quick Launch closed when you added the script to your prefs.js file? That's usually why the edit isn't retained. Did you also note the double back slashes when you added this script to the prefs.js file?

    user_pref( "browser.bookmarks.file ", "C:\\Bookmarks\\bookmarks.html ");

    hello Ramona,

    they were closed
i noted the double slashes as well.

i've created a new profile (haven't moved the nn bookmarks yet) however it is handling the i.e. favorites very well

    user_pref( "browser.bookmarks.file ", "C:\\Bookmarks\\bookmarks.html ");

    Ramona

    thank you
