I tried to install a few mail servers, and they all asked to include in the configuration my ISP, its mail server(pop3 , smtp) and my user id and password. Why? Unless they can't run on their own.

    Need more information.

What exactly are you trying to install when you say you are installing mail servers?

If for example you are trying to get email from your home ISP at your office, then YES, you have to tell it which mail server to retrieve from by adding the pop3 type info..

ALL mail servers require that information. The mail server needs to know how to send the mail. It needs an internet connection and it will use your isp popserver for sending mail.

I must respectfully disagree with TonyT. I can set up a Win 2k box with IIS 5 and use its SMTP service without including any information about my ISP (since they have nothing to do with my domain e-mail) or any information about my dedicated mail server. The web server does not use my pop3 server in any way. The only requirement is name resolution (a DNS server). Also, I can set up a Linux box and use sendmail in the same manner.
To help with the problem, I would need more information about the program being used and the configuration.
