I have XP Home Edition installed on my laptop, it came installed. I am using Outlook Express as my email program. When I try to send email from inside of other programs and on certain web page links I get a box that wants me to select a "Profile Name ". I click ok and it says it cannot find my Internet E-mail Profile, and that i need to delete the current profile and create a new one. If I go to control panel and click on Mail and Fax and delete the current profile it does no good. Additionally, if i click on the specifie profile and click on properties for Internet Email it says "The specific action cannot be completed ". What this means is that the only way I can send email from any other location in windows is to manually start Outlook Express and then cut and paste the email address. Suggestions?

One other thing, if I go to Internet Options in IE and try to select an email program it is blank, there are no email programs to select. An yet OE is in the new selection block just below it.

Oh, I just noticed, your new member.. Hi jetjamr, and welcome to the board.

You should be in the IE/OE forum but since this has sat unaswered for a time (with that "0" response number glaring at me like a beacon) I will see if I can get the ball rolling. Are you familiar with and have you searched the archives of past posts for an answer to this before asking? Asking with the best of intensions because as a new member you may have over looked this feature.

Information below is based on the assumption that OE and IE are your desired defaults.

From within Outlook Express and using the toolbar, Click on Tools>options>and on the general tab look down at the botton in the section named "Default Messageing Program ". Is the two (mail $ news) option buttons Of "make deafult" active(black) or grayed. If black (active) Make OE the default. Apply and okay your way out.

From within Internet Explorer and using it's toolbar, click on Tools>Internet Options> Programs tab... Make sure Outlook Express (and not Outlook) is designated as the default Mail and news Programs. Put a check in the box next the line IE should check to see if it is the default browser. Apply and oaky your way out.

Was this the way you have yours setup already?

    -----------------
I'm just going to tuck this away in here in case it should wind up being needed. Ignore for now as it may not apply to your particular problem.

    Hi again jetjamr,

I got your email but this board and most if not all members prefer to address the problems posted on the board, on the board and in the original post. This helps others with the same or similar problem both in finding the fix and possibly learning new ways to approach a problem. The added advantage is you get many heads working on a problem which is often better than one and we all keep an eye out for any error or bloopers or gaps in memory that may be posted along the way. So I hope you don't mind that I'm about to cut and paste your email here and continue on with this problem....That said....

Well it does look like the link I previously posted is now needed. I guess you took me at my word and literally did not look into the link. You should do so now. If the you have any problems or questions regarding the procedure let me know. Essentially it boils down to allowing OE to register itself with the registry again by:
From the Run line (if the Outlook Express and Internet Options methods do not register Outlook Express as the default e-mail program, use this method):
    1. Click on the Start button.
    2. Scroll up to and Click Run.
    3. Type the following line, or highlight the bolded text and paste onto your run line, including the quotation marks, where (replace the word "drive" with the letter of YOUR drive) in which Outlook Express is installed, and then click OK:
    "drive:\program files\outlook express\msimn.exe" /reg

For example if c: is where your Program Files folder and subfolder of OE it would be:
    "C:\program files\outlook express\msimn.exe" /reg

Now open IE and follow the directions previously given (in my other thread within this post) for the "programs" tab default settings. OE should now be available either highlighted already or use the dropdown error to the right of the whited type-in field to access and choose Outlook Express from the list of available programs. Select OE, Put a check in the box next the line IE should check to see if it is the default browser. Apply and okay your way out.
(I'm not sure if a reboot will be necessary but try out the email button within IE, if it works your good to go if not restart and try the email button.)

Let me know if this worked. If not the second procedure in the sublinked Microsoft kb.article (a manual registry hkey and value will have to be looked at or added if missing) will have to be tried.

    Half way there.....oh goddess

You are incorrect oh beautiful one....i did follow your link and it fixed half the problem. Inside IE I can now select "Read Messages" and it will launch OE, unfortunately it has not fixed the "New Message" choice. When this is selected I get a box that says "Choose Profile" with my name in it. When I click OK I get a yield sign box and the message "Couldn't read your Internet E-mail profile. Please exit, delete the current profile and create a new one. "

So I go to the Control Panel, click on Mail and Fax, then Show Profiles and delete my profile. Then I try to add a new one by clicking on Add, check marking Internet E-mail and Next. Then there is a button "Setup Mail Account" which when pressed does nothing. If you press the next button button it says "Before you can use Internet E-mail, you need to configure your Internet Email Connection....." I am on DSL and use a wireless router that I send and receive email all day long. More Turkey Day thoughts, Happy Thanksgiving! :)

Okay lets try step or method #two just to make sure the registry keys and values are there and are correct.

Before you modify the registry, make sure you back it up either "in total, meaning the whole thing" or export the hkeys envolved prior to the change. Also make sure you understand how to restore the registry if a problem occurs. For information about how to back up, restore, and edit the registry, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
Description of the Microsoft Windows Registry
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/256986

Exporting the hkey *\OutLook Express and values should be enough in this case. This is not a system critical regedit we're about to mess with. While I don't forsee any problems, accidents do happen. If you are not familiar with how to do this and need help, just ask or click on the help button within registry editor. There's a topic on how to export keyvalues before making changes. No big deal when you know how. It sounds more complicated then it is. That being said.........Do the following.....

To check out or add the data string to the default mail client key:
1.Click Startbutton, click Run, and then type regedit. The registry editor will open.

    2. In the left pane (which is the list on the left); Locate the following key in the registry:(just click the keys and subkeys until you come to the key named "OutLook Express ")
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Clients\Mail\Outlook Express

    3. Again in left pane list
*click on the folder named "Outlook Express ".
*Two values should be displayed in the right pane:
*One is named Default, which has a value of Outlook Express
*The other is DLLPath, which contains the path to Msoe.dll on your computer.
*That value should be: drive:\PROGRAM FILES\OUTLOOK EXPRESS\MSOE.DLL where the word "drive is YOUR drive letter and "progams files" path to to OutLook Express folder. For example:C:\PROGRAM FILES\OUTLOOK EXPRESS\MSOE.DLL

    4. If the DLLPath value is not present or is incorrect, you'll need to add or change this value.

    5. If it is not there.......
*Click Edit, point to New, and then click [/b]String Value.
*New Value #1 is displayed, with the text selected. Type DllPath, and then press the ENTER key.
*Double-click the new DLLPath value key (you just made) to open it. In the Value Data box, type the path to the Msoe.dll file on your computer, for example:(again replacing the word drive with your drive letter.
    drive:\PROGRAM FILES\OUTLOOK EXPRESS\MSOE.DLL

    6. Click OK, and then quit Registry Editor.

NOTE:My registry value for the key above is:
%ProgramFiles%\Outlook Express\msoe.dll which amounts to the same thing more or less. Without going into an explanation of the use of the symbols "% ", I'm pointing this out in case you have the value as shown in my mine. Also you should check out the HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Clients\Mail for the same keys and values, but only if they exist and are incorrect. If there not there don't make em. I don't have them in this hive and My IE/OE works as it should. I'll assume if they aren't in current user the local user values are used. I may be wrong but if so someone will point it out.

Try to send mail from a link or another program. See if this fixes it. If not we'll move on to something else. Let me know.....
