what i am looking for are detailed steps to perform to make an image of a hard drive so that if the drive fails I can restore the system back once a new drive is installed. so the cd with the image needs to be bootable with ghost initializing and it starts the restore function.

have got both copies cuz it only cost me 35.00 so it was cheap plus i got partition magic for same price.

everytime i try to write the image to my dvdrw pacific digital 8x it keeps telling me the cd is not formatted. have no idea what the heck is wrong here. so far am not a fan of dvdrw's think i will go back to my normal cdrw.

if anyone knows the best way to accomplish what i am trying to do it would be greatly appreciated. am getting very frustrated and have already thrown away 3 dvdr cd's. this is going to make me drink heavily today.

i am not against uninstalling version 9 ghost and going back to 2003 if thats what you suggest. my system is xp pro 512mb ram

Well, ghost can span multiple cds w/out any problems if all does not fit on 1 cdr. RW disks are not as good as R disks for boot cds.

Don't use CD RWs for this project. Only CD Rs. Better results.

    Your statements are confusing.
DVDRW are NOT CDs, they are DVDs.
There are 3 types of DVD and CD disks:
    DVD, DVDR, DVDRW
    CD, CDR, CDRW
You can burn to DVDR, DVDRW, CDR, CDRW disks.
Which one are you trying to burn to?

A DVDRW or CDRW is a special type of disk and data on the disk can be written over top of, just like data on a hard drive. DVR & CDR disks can also be used more than once, but data on them cannot be erased or the space that the data uses cannot be used again by writing over top of the data.

RW disks MUST be formatted just like a hard drive needs to be formatted so it can be used. Put a blank RW disk in the drive, rt click the drive icon in My Computer and select "format disk ". This will prepare the RW disk so data can be written to it.

However, it is better NOT to use RW disks for projects like this, it is better to use CDR or DVR disks, you will have more success with these types.

Next, go to symantec's support site and see if your burner is supported by ghost. Ghost cannot work with all DVD and CD burner drives. http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPOR... Ghost&ver=9.0&src=sg&pcode=ghost&svy=&csm=no

i understand all that have been using cdr and cdrw for many years now. the dvd cd's are r. use once or append to but cant erase. the dvd burner when trying to write to it gets so far into the ghost process and then it tells me the dvdr that i am using is not formatted. which makes no sense to me at all cuz you cant format them they are already preformatted and ready for use. no matter how many new dvdr's i put in the drive the message is the same. its a pacific digital 8x. even tried burning at a lower speed with same results.

i admit dvd burning is a new thing for me have always used normal cdr or cdrw's but the data and things i am doing take up to many normal cdr's that i thought i would try the 4.7g dvd's. want to start making images of machines i work on using ghost and then if a problem with machine just insert the disk and have it but the image back on the drive. have not used ghost since the days when you used a boot floppy with ghost executable on it and the cd in the other drive and boom you were on your way. ghost 2003 and ver 9 have me a lot confused as how to get that result.

Symantec says if get errors burning to a DVR, then try a different brand DVR. When CDR first came out, some brands were reliable an dothers were not. I remember buying a 50 pack of CDRs once and all but about 10 of them failed.
