I have some Altec Lansing speakers and i have noticed recently they have developed quite a hum, like power line noise is coming out of them. I want to open them and see if a capacitor is faulty and I cannot see how to get them apart. i have looked and see no visible screws or any other method of opening them. has anyone ever pulled apart a speaker?

I think I would try another set of speakers. Could you borrow some?

Once you have determined that it is the speaker at fault, I would discard them and buy some more. If there is no access, they are probably too cheap to worry about repair.

On some speakers, the screws are located under stickers that are put there to tattle if you try to get into them during warrenty.

    Bill,
I know you are right, they seem glued shut, so i would end up destroying them trying to get at the insides. I know its the speaker because with everythibg shut down and unplugged from the computer they still buzz.

    Hi Chuck,

    I agree with Bill.
One thing you check is if the speaker cables run adjacent to power cables. A buzzing could be created from the field of the power cables.

Try turning the volume on the speakers down and the volume on the PC up.

Sounds like the gain is too high on the speakers.

Try hooking the speakers up to a Walkman, or a boombox and see if the hum is still there.
