I am once again trying to help my in-laws with their computer problems. There is a whole bunch of different things going on, so I will try to keep it simple for me and try to address different problems with different posts.
I went to the startup tab in msconfig to see what all is loading. I was able to uncheck a few things, using the startup contents list from the Pacman's Portal. However, there were a bunch of items not listed, so rather than uncheck them without knowing what they are, I will list them below, and hope someone here can clue me in on what they might be.

    kejnqivcxw C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\dknojm.exe
    salm c:\temp\salm.exe
    wnupmj c:\windows\wnupmj.exe
    MFCSJ.EXE C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\MFCSJ.EXE
    MFCQA32.EXE C:\WINDOWS\MFCQA32.EXE
    APPUB.EXE C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\APPUB.EXE
    NETOC.EXE C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\NETOC.EXE
    SDKRA.EXE C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\SDKRA.EXE
    SDKPR.EXE C:\WINDOWS\SDKPR.EXE
    SYSUW32.EXE C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\SYSUW32.EXE
    APPOW32.EXE C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\SYSUW32.EXE
    JAVAFU.EXE C:\WINDOWS\JAVAFU.EXE
    CRZL32.EXE C:\WINDOWS\CRZL32.EXE
    WINWT32.EXE C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\WINWT32.EXE
    SYSUR32.EXE C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\SYSUR32.EXE
    ATLMA.EXE C:\WINDOWS\ATLMA.EXE
    ADDTL.EXE C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\ADDTL.EXE
    MSGZ32.EXE C:\WINDOWS\MSGZ32.EXE
    ADDWD32.EXE C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\ADDWD32.EXE
    CRNW32.EXE C:\WINDOWS\CRNW32.EXE
    MSLG32.EXE C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\MSLG32.EXE
    IPZT.EXE C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\IPZT.EXE
    WINYA32.EXE C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\WINYA32.EXE

    Thanks for any help.

Oh, I forgot to mention, they're running Windows 98.

A lot of "junk" running there.

Download and run SpyBot and allow it to remove what it finds.

    Run this online virus check

    Download, install and run HiJackThis

Copy/paste the contents of the log it creates, back here for comment.

I reckon it would be simpler to stop all these apps running and then do what
    WhitPhil says.
    regards

Ewwww! Yikes! I feel the critters crawling all over me just looking at that nasty list. I think your in-laws and their computer are about to thank you.... :)

Just to be polite, I wanted to alert those helping me that I'm not ignoring their suggestions. I have to wait until I can get back over to my in-law's house to follow the suggestions. I will post back when I do so. Thanks for the help so far.

Just to update, I believe I have resolved my questions in this post by fixes made in connections with another post I made concerning the same computer. Thanks for the help.
