The strangest thing...

Hey guys,

Until yesterday i had win98se.

I formatted c:\ using "format /u /s "

and installed XP Pro

Installation went smoothly, everything's fine,

but when i'm starting my computer, it asks me which OS i want to load,

Microsoft Windows XP Professional or
Microsoft Windows

if i select XP everything's fine
and if i select windows,
i just get the dos prompt.

why i still have win98 installed?

how do i get rid of this startup menu, and also get rid of win98?


do i have to re-format using different keys??

go to run and type : c:boot.ini
after that erase Microsoft Windows
save and restart .

another thing in my mind...:

i put myself as an administrator on my XP and i am the only user.

how can i cancel the Logon prompt every time i start my comp?

the password is blank...

 

Go to Start>Run, type in "control userpasswords2" (without the quotes, with the space after "control "), click OK.

Uncheck "Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer," click OK.

In the dialog box that opens, enter the user account name and password you want to log onto automatically. If there is no password, leave it blank, click OK.

That should do it.

 

Also, if you installed the .NET Framework Update, it creates a user that is hidden from view on the welcome screen. If you delete this and it should log you on automatically if there is a blank password.

have run "control userpasswords2" and fixed it, thanks a lot!

got a few problems:

- in my old OS (98se), when i selected "shut down ", the case had shutted down itself, but now the computer says "it's now safe to shut down ".
how can i make my computer to shut down by itself again?

- i installed XP with hebrew support (during installation, selected the right to left languages), and i do see hebrew fonts in some of my progs.
but in example, winamp or media player doesn't seem to read files with hebrew names and can't play them.
is there any other support for hebrew in XP, like system fonts or files pack?

does anybody knows how to disable the IE6 SP2 yellow information bar?

There are people out there that Might not be as ( SMART ) as you and do believe that there subject is meaningfull. I've seen your replies on many threads and so far ---thats all the help you've given-------no explination needed!!!!! Try being a little more understanding to those people that this forum was desinged for ---the ones that don't know alot and do need help ===not belittlement !!!!

You must walk the thin line between being a "Soup Natzi" and being constructively critical. You do it well enough that criticism is unwarranted.

- who do you think does all the serious admin work to keep it running?
- who do you think recruited all the (unpaid) staff who keep things civil enough that we can help folks and try to make sure they all get answers?
- who do you think spends quite a bit more money out of his pocket than this forum could possibly generate for him?

No need for much thought since Arie is the answer to all the above. I don't really think he has earned your remarks.

Re: meaningful thread titles - lots of people who never post on here do use the forum. They mostly come on and search. Lots of users search before they post since they hope for a solution but may not find one. If you've ever done a search on here, you might have noticed you got tons of hits and many did not apply to your issue. Usual is to look down thru the list and open those with titles that look likely.

What sort of problem, exactly, do you think a title 'The Strangest Thing' would cause a user to say, "Hey, that one may help" and open it?

FWIW, if I'd seen the thread first I'd have made the same comment about posting rules and thread titles. Lots of new posters don't really think about it but when it's point out, they understand and do fine in the future.
